The Cabinet is likely to take up a proposal for allowing foreign airlines to pick up stakes in Indian carriers, a long-pending demand from the loss-laden sector. Currently, the government allows foreign investors, not related to airline business, to buy up to 49% stakes in domestic airlines but disallows global carriers from investing in the airline.

The government had initiated the process early this year but key United Progressive Alliance constituent Trinamool Congress opposed the move.

Meanwhile, airlines have been crying hoarse about the huge losses which they have been making due to high fuel prices and high cost of operations. Operators of these carriers have also been saying that they have been independently talking to various global carriers about stake sale in their respective airlines but are awaiting a nod from the government.

Among other proposals slated for consideration on Friday is the one on raising the cap of FDI to 74 % in broadcast sector across the board.
