Three million subscribers a month - that is the rate at which, BSNL can grow, now that it is free to award its mega GSM tender, reports CNBC-TV18.

It is celebration time at BSNL, but not just because Motorola has withdrawn its petition challenging the award of BSNL's mega GSM contract. The result of the move means that BSNL will be free to take on more subscribers after creating capacity. Recently, in March, the telecom behemoth added two million subscribers despite capacity constraints. But now BSNL could grow very rapidly.

SD Saxena, Director-Finance, BSNL says, "We should do three million a month, if not more, once capacity is installed, as there is a severe demand backlog."

No operator is even talking about subscriber additions at that rate. Bharti Airtel added about 1.7 million subscribers last month and Reliance Communications added 1.2 million. But if BSNL adds three million a month, the others will have some catching up to do. BSNL certainly has a few million reasons to celebrate.
