B'lore airport ready, but road to airport isn't!Published on Sat, Feb 09, 2008 at 10:51 | Source : CNBC-TV18 Updated at Sat, Feb 09, 2008 at 14:17
A Banglorean says angrily, "If I was the PM or CM, I would have sacked the bureaucrat who planned the new airport without a road." Not an encouraging thing to hear barely two months before Bangalore's brand new international airport starts operations. With the first flight set to take off on March 30, many Bangaloreans feel there is a long way to go before the airport becomes a hit. With the airport, at a distance of 40 kms from the city, yet to get connecting roads, the IT city's industrialists are disappointed. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw , CMD, Biocon , said, "I think BIAL has done a fabulous job of building a new airport, but I think the government of Karnataka has fallen short of providing reasonable connectivity to the airport. If this is what the challenge is going to be for Banagloreans, isn't it going to have an impact as Bangalore is one of the most business unfriendly city?" At 1 pm, from M.G.Road in the heart of the city to the Bangalore International airport, it takes a cool two hours to reach there. The existing Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd airport is at a distance of 12 kms from the city, at best, a 45 minute drive. The reason why a lot of frequent flyers feel - 1) Bangalore should have two airports because there are more frequent fliers for domestic airlines than international airlines, and 2) Short destinations like Chennai, Hyderabad if you spend upto two three hours commuting to the airport with no connectivity, you end up spending a lot of time. Seems like it will take a while before Banagloreans warm up to their new airport.
