Striking a sarcastic note, BJP today said the likely appointment of Home Minister P Chidambaram - whom the Opposition has tried to drag into the 2G scam - as head of the Empowered Group of Ministers on telecom spectrum was like making him the "policeman" in the case.

Amid reports that Chidambaram is likely to head the EGoM on spectrum, senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters in reply to a question, "That is good. He has been made the Kotwal (policeman). It will be fun."

BJP sources said its leaders will find it easier to target the government inside and outside Parliament if Chidambaram heads the spectrum EGoM.

The Opposition has alleged that former telecom minister and main accused in the 2G spectrum scam A Raja has said in his affidavit that all decisions pertaining to the telecom policy were taken after due consultations with Chidambaram who was the Finance Minister then.

The post of EGoM chairperson fell vacant after Pranab Mukherjee quit the Cabinet. Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar was to be made the Chairperson but he recused himself citing attempts to drag him into the 2G controversy.

Sources said Chidambaram's name tops the list of ministers who will be part of the reconstituted EGoM on spectrum.

BJP sources said if Chidambaram heads the EGoM, its leaders are likely to make direct attacks on him, especially when the 2G spectrum issue comes up.
