Apollo Hospitals has ambitious plans. It runs 46 hospitals in India, Africa and UAE and is now looking westwards. In this exclusive report, CNBC-TV18 finds out why Apollo wants to acquire hospitals in the Caribbean. Americans are the focus of Apollo Hospitals' expansion plans. The company says, that in a few weeks, it will acquire hospitals in the Caribbean, off the US coast. "We want to give them the taste of it. We want to have it offshore in the Cayman Islands, Bahamas. In those areas, we are setting up hopitals to show them how good we are," said Pratap Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group.
Apollo gets 35,000 to 40,000 foreign patients a year. Most of them are from US. But Apollo says, that the number could climb if US patients were shown, right at their doorstep, how good Indian healthcare is. The company says that its facilities abroad are coming up just in time. That's because it's estimated that by 2015, a quarter of US workers will not have healthcare and will look for it outside the US. Apollo says funding the acquisitions won't be a problem. "Other investors are coming forward saying Apollo should just manage these while we fund it. So funds are not a problem," said Pratap Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Group. Apollo also wants to set up hospitals in Mauritius, the Fiji Islands and off the British coast.
