Amul dairy products exports set to rise by 20%: MD

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which sells dairy products under the popular brand Amul, expects to increase its exports by 20% on the back of surging demand.

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, which sells dairy products under the popular brand Amul, expects to increase its exports by 20% on the back of surging demand. The federation is exporting products like butter, cheese, ghee and sri khand worth Rs 100 crore, at present.


 "We are expecting to increase our export by 20% soon," Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) Managing Director R S Sodhi told PTI.
    
The Amul brand has significant presence in overseas markets such as Mauritius, the UAE, the US, Oman, Bangladesh, Australia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and a few South African countries.
    
Sodhi said, "Though our focus is mainly on the domestic markets, we have to ship our products outside to cater mainly to the needs of Indians settled abroad".


Formed in 1946, Amul is jointly owned by 3.03 million milk producers in Gujarat. Amul spurred the White Revolution in India which in turn made India the largest producer of milk and milk products in the world. It is also the world's largest vegetarian cheese brand.
    
Amul is the largest food brand in India and world's largest pouched milk brand with an annual turnover of USD 2.2 billion (2010-11). It is selling milk and other products through 6500 outlets across the country.
   
The Dairy major had a turnover of Rs 11,668 crore in 2011-12 which it plans to enhance to Rs 14,400 crore in 2012-13 fiscal.
