Here is a verbatim transcript of Suresh Venkat's comments on CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompanying video.
After Jet, now Air India is embarking on a cost cutting drive. But there will no retrenchments, atleast for now. The minister for Civil Aviation Praful Patel on the sidelines of India aviation - 2008, categorically said, "There will be no retrenchment in Air India. Certainly slowdown will affect growth plans, it will affect the future employment opportunities which would have come in the way of Air India in case the Civil Aviation industry was in a much better health."
However, Air India is proposing a voluntary leave scheme. Under the scheme, an employee can go on leave for three-five years and will not be paid during that period, but his job remains intact. Air India is currently planning to confine this scheme to non-operational staff.
JN Bhargava, Executive Director, Corporate Communications, Air India said, "This proposal is only for non-opertional staff. We have only said it's a voluntary leave for three-five years and there is no question of removing anyone."
The voluntary leave proposal is yet to get green signal from Air India board. If this comes to affect, the scheme will be applicable to nearly 15,000 of Air India staff who come under non-operational category.
