Anil Agarwal has another heavyweight from India Inc on his team. Former SAIL Chairman SK Roongta has joined Vedanta Resources and will take over as Managing Director of Vedanta Aluminium from June 2.
Roongta will head the Aluminium business of the group which includes Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO). He will oversee 3 million tonnes of fully integrated aluminium manufacturing facilities together with 6000 MW of captive power plants. This includes Vedanta's facility at Lanjigarh which has been mired in controversy over environmental norms.
Roongta, who was chairman of one of India's largest public sector companies SAIL from August 2006 to May 2010, made efforts to streamline processes to expand steel capacity and safeguard the firm's interest by retaining rights over Chiria mines.
