Modest auto sales growth in May: Microsec

Microsec has come out with its report on auto space.

A depressed market sentiment largely because of the petrol price rise and high interest rate environment, has led most carmakers to record only a modest growth in May. After the bonanza in March this year, when car sales were up by 20 per cent, this is the second consecutive month, when sales has hit a 10-year low growth of mere three percent. Market leader, Maruti Suzuki sales declined by 4.99%, led by a 29.03 % decline in sales for popular petrol compact models Alto, WagonR, A-Star. SX4 sales declined by 85.01%, while the utility vehicle segment helped pick up volumes on the back of the new Ertiga MUV.

Driven by sales of the Nano small car, passenger vehicle sales at Tata Motors Ltd rose 5.68% to 20,503 units compared to 19,401 units in May, 2011. The fuel efficient car billed as the world’s cheapest, contributed 41% of Tata Motor’s total sales in May. Nano sales increased by 31% to 8,507 units. Bajaj Auto reported adecline of 1.85%, year-on-year growth in vehicle sales to 352,219 units in May due to lower commercial vehicle (CV) sales and nil exports to Sri Lanka. The company had sold a total of 358,849 units in the same month of previous year.

Hero MotoCorp Ltd, continued its strong sales path, dispatching 556,644 motorcycles and scooters, an expansion of 11.28% over the corresponding month last year. Automotive manufacturer, TVS Motor Company reported a decline in total sales of over 5.33% for May, 2012 as compared to the corresponding period last year. TVS Motor Company, registered total sales of 1,76,012 units in May, 2012 against 1,85,930 units registered in May 2011.

Updates on auto companies:

Hero MotoCorp, reported total sales of 556,644 units in the month of May, 2012, registering a growth of 11.28% over the corresponding month in 2011, when the company had sold 500,234units. The Total Sales of HMCL increased by 0.92 % on MoM basis. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13 grew by 8.93% to 1,108,201 units against 1,017,333 units, during the same period of last year.

TVS Motor Company, registered total sales of 176,012 units in May, 2012 compared to 185,930 units in the corresponding month of the previous year, hence, showing a decline of 5.33%. The company reported a growth of 0.89% on MoM basis. Two-wheeler sales of the company declined by 5% for the month of May, 2012, which stood at 173,092 units from 181,891 units in the year-ago period. Scooter sales declined by 2% to 38,833 units in May, from 38,168 units in the same month of 2011, while motorcycle sales declined by 16% to 64,134 units from 75,619 units in the year-ago period. Company's total exports decreased by 13.00% to 22,817 units from 26,178 units in the same month of previous year. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13 declined by 0.91% to 350,467 units against 353,674 units during the same period of last year. 

Bajaj Auto , registered total sales of 352,219 units in May, 2012, compared to 358,849 units in the corresponding month of the previous year, hence, showing a decline of 1.85%. The company reported a decline of 7.70% on MoM basis. For the month of May, 2012, the motorcycle sales were up by 1.24% to 321,922 units and three-wheeler commercial vehicle sales were down by 25.85% to 30,297 units on YoY basis. Export sales increased by 2.96% on YoY basis to 130,573units. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13 increased by 1.05% to 733,809 units against 726,158 units during the same period of last year.

The sales volume of Maruti Suzuki stood at 98,884 units in May, 2012 against 104,073 units in the same month of last year, therefore, registering a decline of 4.99%. However, on MoM basis, the sales decline by 1.52%. Sales volume in the Mini segment registered a decline of 2.69% on YoY basis. However, sales of Compact declined by 6.83% on YoY basis, while sales of Super-compact increased by 14.17%. Sales in Mid Size Segment declined by 36.12% on YoY basis. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13, declined by 0.99% to 199,299 units against 201,228 units, during the same period of last year.

The total sales of Tata Motors stood at 64,347 units in May, 2012, which was Increased by 3.61% on YoY basis and 7.09% on MoM basis. MHCV’s volume declined by 19.84% on YoY basis, and 24.39% on MoM basis to 12,451 units. LCV sales grew by 25.58% on YoY basis and 9.49% on MoM basis to 27,174 units. Overall CV sales volume were Grow by 6.60% on YoY basis and 14.37 % on MoM basis to 39,625 units. Passenger car sales volume grow by 5.68% on YoY basis to 39,625 units. Indica sales grew by 1% on YoY basis to 5,467units. Indigo range sales were down by 20% on YoY basis to 3,397 units. The company's sales from exports at 4,219 vehicles in May, 2012 are lower by 23.76% compared to 5,534 vehicles in May last year. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13 declined by 1.77% to 124,433 units against 126,679 units during the same period of last year.

The total sales of Ashok Leyland stood at 8,648 units in May, 2012, which grew by 51.06% on YoY basis and fell by 0.44% on MoM basis. In May, 2012, the sales of Ashok Leyland MHCV increased by 10.79% to 6,343 units from 5,725 units in the same month of 2011. It Sold LCV of 2,305 units in April, 2012. Cumulative sales of the company for the period, April- May of FY2012-13, increased by 41.29% to 17,334 units against 12,268 units during the same period of last year.
