UR Associates has come out with its report on agri sector.

The monsoon deficiency situation across the country has been constant at 22% over the last two weeks. North West India and South Peninsular India (which includes major states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan) continue to be the major deficient areas with 39% and 24% respectively. The deficient rainfall has also resulted in depletion of water levels in our reservoirs. According to the Central Water Commission, the total water storage in the 84 important reservoirs in our country is at 36.321 billion cubic meters, which is 24% of the total storage capacity. The current year's storage is nearly 55% of last year's storage and 76% of the average of last ten years. The water level situation in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, UP and AP is most worrying with the departure from normal levels being more than 40% on the downside.

The deficient monsoon has effected the sowing of coarse cereals the most. The acreage of coarse cereals is currently at 11.75 million hectares compared to 16.09 million hectares in the normal season.

The sowing of rice has improved and is now only 0.87 million hectares below normal. On the other hand, the sowing of oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton and jute are continuing well and their acreage is above normal.

Dip in output, rising costs dent McLeod Russel’s profit
McLeod Russel India Ltd, reported nearly 49% drop in net profit to Rs 190 million on the back of a stagnant topline during the first quarter of this fiscal as against the same period last year. Though average realisation increased by over Rs 30 a kg, this was clearly not enough to compensate the decline in production due to unfavourable weather conditions and rise in costs. In the net effect, operating profit declined by as much as 60%. “We hope to cover increase in costs and production losses through higher realisations,” Mr. Khaitan told reporters after the company’s annual general meeting. According to him, dip in production has impacted tea exports to markets such as the UK, Ireland and Germany in the first two months of the fiscal..

Rallis India net rises 5% to Rs 240 million
Rallis India net profit has gone up 5% to touch Rs 240 million. The company registered a forex loss of Rs 50 million against a gain of Rs 2.9 million recorded in the same period last year. Income grew 16% to Rs 3,450 million compared to Rs 2,970 million during the same period last year. The company logged in other income of Rs 90 million from the sale of residential property in Mumbai. Rallis has enhanced its stake in its subsidiary Metahelix Life Sciences, a seed company, to 75.64% from 60.21%. Mr. V. Shankar, Managing Director and CEO, Rallis India, said, though the rains have been deficient this year, a lot of catching up has happened in the last few weeks after the monsoon revived in most parts of the country..
