US mkts dip further on disappointing housing data

Stocks extended their losses for second straight session after disappointing housing data and a big drop in energy prices. The DOW was down 41 points, the Nasdaq off by 24 points and the S&P 500 closed lower by 10 points.

Stocks started the week just barely in positive territory; gains in GE, the parent company of CNBC and JP Morgan led the Dow higher. The Dow gained 21 points, the Nasdaq was up 11 points and S&P 500 added about 6 points.

Investors remain cautious ahead of Fridays jobs report. Stocks manage only a small gain but did break a four day loosing streak. The Dow gained 64 points, the Nasdaq added 16 points, and the S&P 500 was up 8 points. Weekly jobless claims casted down on how the jobs report might be on Friday that weighed on the market this Thursday.

Stocks finished slightly higher today, financial services companies and retailers leading the way. After the bell, Nordstrom reported that its profits over the last three months decreased 27%. But it raised its targets for the full year. Nordstrom shares fell slightly after hours.

A selloff in financial stocks and some gloomy economic data helped leave the overall downdraft in the markets today as traders and investors wait for the latest pronouncement on the economy from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has for the first time in 10 months revised its crude demand forecast for 2009. It has increased its global oil demand estimate by 120,000 barrels to 83.3 million barrels a day.
