The reason why matters have come to a head now (and not earlier) is clearly the arrival of a strong government which is not willing to let the courts walk over its jurisdiction.

Is Narendra Modi more de Gaulle than Reagan, Thatcher or Lee? If you were to ask Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President of Delhis Centre for Policy Research, the answer would be yes. He thinks of Modi as a Republican Monarch.

The question the report raises is whether the NJAC will be up to handling such volumes of judicial appointments. The story also implies that during the tenure of the Modi government, the courts will see a radical change in composition 68 percent of SC appointments and 80 percent of high court appointments.

A city of about one million (1.5 million if you take the agglomeration) located between two rivers, Krishna and Budameru, Vijayawada is at the centre of the rump state of Andhra. The Vijayawada-Guntur belt is the bastion of the Kamma community, the community to which Naidu belongs.

The answer should be an irrevocable shift to greater federalism. He can talk passionately about skill-building, toilets, cleanliness, smart cities, financial inclusion, and pucca homes for every household by 2022, but beyond providing the money to states, the Centre can do little about these goals. In the end, it is states that have to deliver.

We think they want Kashmir - but this is mostly wrong. Even if we were to hand over Kashmir to them on a platter tomorrow their enmity will not end. When your self-definition is that you are an Islamic state created to defend Islam and to defeat the Hindu state called India, it cannot be about Kashmir at all.

Some bitter truths about the real nature of street-level politics in Bengal are worth noting at this point. Contrary to their benign image in secular politics, the CPI(M) in West Bengal ran a thuggish regime.

The disappearance of the bullet-proof glass and the teleprompter was more than symbolic; it was a Prime Minister telling his people I want nothing coming between you and me, between government and people.

The constitution clearly says that the executive will appoint judges after consulting the judiciary. Articles 124 and 217 are the relevant laws on the appointment of judges.

In a few sentences Modi has effectively given us a deep message: women can progress only as fast as men can change. You can give women better protection, but real protection lies in how we bring up our sons. Effectively, he has emphasised the importance of parenting sons better and which is where we are failing as a nation.

? According to Firstpost Editor-in-chief R Jagannathan, there`s nothing surprising about the polls and they are confirming the pre-poll trends. He also says that one can no longer deny that there is definitely a Modi wave given that the party is expected to get one third of the vote share in the country

He never needed to do that earlier as Kejriwal too had strategically avoided direct attacks on Modi, till he resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Some like R Jagannathan thought
