HPCL lost Rs 6,620 crore on selling diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene at government controlled rates in April-June. Out of this, it got Rs 2,516 crore from government as cash subsidy and another Rs 3,609 crore from upstream firms like ONGC, leaving an unmet loss of Rs 495 crore.

Fuel retailers sell diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene at government controlled rates which are below market price. The loss they thus incur is made good through cash subsidy from the government and dole from upstream firms like ONGC.

Since diesel under recovery is down to 1.33 as of now, the subsidy burden on this particular product is close to peaking. Hence, this is a reason for comfort in terms of the Budget numbers for the ministry of finance and for the government overall.

Parikh himself says there is no proposal to hike prices, but the number of subsidised cylinders may be reduced. He believes a cap at six cylinders is reasonable and it will also encourage people to use gas efficiently.

the ATF is priced higher as it subsidises the other fuels, like kerosene and LPG. it is currently priced around same level as petrol. how much price reduction r u expecting in ATF price, and will that also result in the price of petrol coming down as well? even if there is a minor reduction in ATF

Govt. should look at alternatives and rationalize expenditure to keep the price at the current level. It is suggested to bring gas, kerosene, petrol, diesel under a comprehensive scheme and provide it at extremely competitive rates through rationalizing expenditure.

hold on to HPCL or buy around 405 levels. This stock is bound to go up as indirect oil reforms are the only reality and possibility in the next 6-8 months. I am sure with a looming large fiscal deficit, there will be some bold announcements on LPG and Kerosene prices in the budget.
