Its the biggest safety recall undertaken in India by Detroit-based carmaker, General Motors. Today, with a 1.8 percent market share in India, GM is standing on the fringes of the Indian auto market.

The recall, also one of India's biggest, follows a move in 2013 to recall 114,000 Tavera sports utility vehicles. That recall aimed to address issues relating to emission standards and other regulatory specifications.

"The price hike on Chevrolet vehicles built in India ranges from approximately Rs 15,000 to Rs 61,000 depending upon the various models and variants with effect from January 2015," General Motors India Vice President P Balendran said in a statement.

General Motors India today reported 27.32 per cent decline in July sales at 4,726 units as against 6,503 units sold in the same month of last year. The July 2014 sales include 1,563 units of Beat, 1,222 units of Tavera and 812 units of Chevrolet Enjoy, the company said in a statement.
