Equity funds managed to post positive gains in spite of markets ending flat. The BSE benchmark rose 52.83 points or 0.3%, to close at 17,636.80. Meanwhile, the NSE benchmark went up 19.60 points or 0.37% to 5,359.35.

Equity funds recovered smartly in the previous trading session owing to bulk buying by the investors and traders. The BSE benchmark rose 285.37 points to close at 17,731.12 while the NSE benchmark moved up 94.30 points to close at 5,375.50.

Thematic funds are based on a particular theme which varies from being multi-sector, international exposure, etc. Hence being risky in nature, financial advisor Anil Rego advices investors to limit their exposure to 10-12% and invest in only those funds which compliment their existing portfolio.

Equity funds slumped after Indian market witnessed its first bad week in 2012. The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 154.93 points or 0.86% to close at 17,923.57. Meanwhile, the 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 54 points or 0.98% to 5,429.30.
