The benchmark Sensex fell below the psychological 18,000-mark while the Nifty tanked below the 5400 level, which was on expected lines.

The Sensex continued the sell-off for the second consecutive day and closed today's session below the 17,000 mark on the back of downtrend in oil & gas exploration, metal, banking, realty, auto and select power stocks. Weak global cues also weighed on the markets.

At 14:06 hours IST - the Sensex breached the 17,000 mark while the Nifty tested the 5,050 level on the downside on the back of further decline in European markets, which lost 1.5-2%. The US index futures slipped nearly 1%.

The Sensex witnessed huge selling pressure in the last couple of hours especially after European markets opening and closed the session below the 17,000 mark. The sell-off in realty, capital goods, banking, power, auto and metal stocks pushed the Nifty below the 5,000 mark.

The benchmark indices have extended their losses further as oil exploring, power, technology, capital goods, banking, and auto stocks sell-off. Weak global cues are also weighing on market sentiment. The Nifty is trying to claw back above 3,000 mark but it is meeting with resistance.

The markets have continued Monday's losses further on dismal global cues. Selling is seen in oil, auto, metal, and select banking stocks. The Nifty has tested the 3,000 mark. Tata Motors, ONGC, Cairn, ICICI Bank, JP Associates, HCL Tech, ACC, Tata Steel, Sterlite, M&M, Maruti, RIL, L&T and HDFC are some of the losers in trade today.
