The Toyota Safety Education Programme (TSEP), an initiative by Toyota Kirloskar Motor, was launched nationally today at the Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi. TSEP is an interactive learning programme on road safety, designed especially for school children in the age group of 6-12 years. Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi, Mrs. Sheila Dikshit, formally launched the programme today in the presence of the Joint Commissioner of Police-Traffic, Delhi, Mr S.N Shrivastava and Managing Director of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa.

Launched as a pilot project last year, the programme was deemed successful and reached out to more than 20,000 children in Bangalore, alone. Now in its second year, and on a national scale, TSEP is slated to cover over one lakh school children across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. And in order to sustain the programme, the other two objectives of TSEP are to train teachers on road safety and conduct safety events for the public.

Speaking on the ocassion, Mrs Dikshit said, "I am happy that this unique programme is aimed at training the future generations on traffic and road safety.  Flouting of traffic rules is indeed a matter of great concern across the country and I congratulate Toyota for taking the right step in solving this issue."

Sharing details of the programme, Mr. H. Nakagawa, Managing Director, TKM, said, "Toyota worldwide has been actively engaged in a wide range of activities designed to educate people on traffic safety. Keeping in mind that children and young adults are the most vulnerable to road accidents, Toyota in India has initiated the Toyota Safety Education Programme or TSEP. Toyota aims not only to sensitise school children on road safety but also hopes to make our future generations, better motorists."

A first of its kind, the programme reinforces Toyota Kirloskar Motor's commitment to develop the community through contribution to society. As a responsible automobile Toyota will work towards promoting activities in the Asia region focusing on traffic safety and the environment."The programme will reach out to over 1,00,000 school children in five cities this year alone and will gradually extend to other cities across India in the coming years. This is a long-term initiative and commitment aimed at creating a society that has better road sense," stated Mr Shekar Viswanathan, Whole-time Director, TKM.

The various initiatives under this programme are as follows:

The Traffic Safety Interactive Course using the classroom methodology is a 45-minute instruction session which will be held during the social studies or moral science schedules of schools and will cover 500 children in each school in the first year. It will cover various aspects of traffic safety, basic road signals and road sense.

An animation film aims to use a popular mass medium to get the message of road safety across to students. It is a seven-minute film in English and Hindi.

Traffic booths will be installed in the school premises to ensure active participation of children. The booth will display messages on road safety and children will stand to win TSEP t- shirts and caps through interactive quizzes.

The websitewww.tsepindia.com<http://www.tsepindia.com> will update the media and general public on details of the Toyota Safety Education Programme. The website will also allow downloads of reading material and educational wall papers.

A computer game on road safety using virtual simulation has been developed to train children. Puzzles, card games and board games have also been introduced, to enhance interest in road safety through fun learning.
