Angioplasty, pioneered by Dr. Samuel Mathew in 1986 in India, is a very common treatment of choice to avoid bypass surgery today.  Angioplasty is a choice of treatment in many patients in whom bypass surgery can be permanently avoided.

There are certain patients with multiple blockages and blockages in more than two or three arteries or more who earlier had choice of only bypass surgery but now can benefit from angioplasty today in very specialized hospitals like the Lilavati Hospital with very experienced and skilled Cardiologists.

Expertise in medical science has been passed on from generation to generation and teachers to students all over the world.  The best form of teaching is by demonstrating the techniques and surgeries during actual procedures to doctors.  Modern electronic media has made it easier and more practical for a digital gurushishya parampara.  This teaching has now moved from classrooms to audience in big conference rooms.  Today it has further evolved across the seas into different parts of the world.  The digital imaging technique has been able to produce extremely high quality images with two-way communication across the globe and this gives an avenue to teaching.  As India is becoming the global leader in various fields, it is most satisfying and heartening to see her play a leadership role in modern medicine too.

Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai has today positioned itself to reach the level of an institution of excellence in demonstrating and imparting knowledge in the field of complex angioplasty to the world. The group of Cardiologists comprising of Dr. Jamshed Dalal, Dr. Anil Sharma, Dr. Ajit Menon, Dr. Nitin Gokhale and led by Dr. Samuel Mathew is demonstrating very difficult cases of 100% blockages in patients with low heart function.  These are the types of patients who are likely to be at higher risk for bypass surgery.  These patients belong to the age group of 45-79 years which demonstrates the difficulties and complexities of the procedure.  The youngest patient is a lady.  Three such angioplasties are being demonstrated today by the Cardiology Department of Lilavati Hospital to an audience of over 1500 Cardiologists from across the world assembled at the 4th Asian Interventional Cardiovascular Therapeutics Conference in Bangkok.  Each of these three cases is a highly complex and demanding procedure which needs not only the expertise of the Cardiologist, but also huge technological back up with competent technical staff and post operative case all of which the Lilavati Hospital is famous for.

The doctors assembled in Bangkok can communicate with Dr. Mathew and clarify all the doubts while this teaching and transmission is on.
