Rupin Shah awarded BC Roy National Award by MCI

Dr. Rupin Shah, Consultant Andrologist and Microsurgeon at the Lilavati Hospital, has been awarded the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy National Award by the Medical Council of India. The award was presented today by President Pratibha Patil to Dr. Rupin Shah in recognition of his pioneering role in the development of Andrology in India.

Andrology is a new super-specialty that deals with infertility and impotence in men. There is considerable social stigma associated with these medical problems and hence, often, men do not seek help and either suffer in silence or wind up being exploited by quacks. 

For 20 years, Dr Rupin Shah has worked tirelessly to diagnose and treat these problems. He has lectured and published extensively in national and international forums and has trained over a 1000 urologists, surgeons and other specialists.

Dr Shah has been responsible for developing and popularizing many new medical treatments for these problems. Amongst Dr. Rupin Shah's numerous contributions has been the development of the first Indian penile prosthesis to treat men with severe erectile dysfunction related to diabetes, hypertension or other vascular diseases. He has also pioneered new techniques in microsurgery to treat men with no sperm.

 In 2007, the Urological Society of India recognized his work by awarding him the Urology President's Gold Medal. He has been the recipient of many other national and international awards.

Dr. Rupin Shah is currently involved in research on the effects of andropause in Indian men.
