Nokia, the world leader in mobile communications today announced that it will be shipping its 20 millionth mobile handset from its facility in Sriperumbudur, Chennai this November.

Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Congress President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi handed over commemorative Nokia handsets to two of the earliest employees at the manufacturing facility for their contribution to this success and milestone.

Nokia has been able to achieve this feat in a record time of eleven months since it began commercial production in January 2006. This achievement is a reflection of Nokia’s success in creating a world class manufacturing facility in India and scaling it up to cater to the burgeoning demand of the fourth largest telecom market in the world. In keeping with this strong business momentum, the Nokia India factory currently employs 3600, as against the projected 2000 in the beginning of the year.

Also, present on the occasion were The Ambassador of Finland, Mr. Asko Numminen, The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Mr. S S Barnala, several senior ministers, and Mr. D Shivakumar, Vice President and Country General Manager, Customer and Market Operations, Nokia India.
