GE Consumer & Industrial (C&I) has bagged orders totaling INR 20 crore for two of India’s much awaited sports events, the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the Indian Premier League matches, to provide lighting solutions for their designated venues –The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium and the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium respectively.
With the winning bid, GE-C&I will light up the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium for the prestigious Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The tender called for the project to be handled by a manufacturer of lighting fixtures that had been certified ISO 9000- 2000. GE-C&I strategically collaborated with a leading contracting firm in the construction space, to participate in the bid. This joint approach helped both the companies satisfy the terms and conditions of the contract and leverage each other’s strengths.
“This is by far the largest stadium lighting order that we have undertaken in recent times. Our expertise in application design during the pre bid stage swung the order in our favor. With the execution of nearly five stadium projects in the last one year in addition to international projects, we have complete expertise in achieving uniform lighting levels in horizontal and vertical planes.” said Mr. Sanjay Jadhav, Director Sales, GE Consumer & Industrial, India.
The project involves the installation of 700 “Euro Flood” lighting fixtures (type EF2000), an innovatively designed highly efficient fixture that helps deliver the required light level with fewer lamps. This results in a large saving in the running cost.
The Jawaharlal Nehru stadium is slated to be the second largest in the world with a seating capacity of 100,000 spectators. In addition to hosting the opening and closing ceremonies the stadium will also play host to numerous track and field events.
GE-C&I has also been awarded the contract for the installation of floodlights at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium for the Indian Premier League (IPL) that began on the 18th of April. The contract is worth INR 5 crores. The project was successfully completed and handed over on the 31st of March 2008.
“With this, the list of stadiums lit by us in the last two years has gone up to seven. With 22 more cricket stadiums to go in for flood lighting and a few more stadiums coming up for the Commonwealth games, GE-C&I India looks forward to continuing this winning streak” says Mr. Ananth Ramaswami, President & CEO, GE C&I, India.
The GE Lighting Solution for Stadiums is unique in consuming the lowest power for the given lighting level. The system has been designed to avoid glare. In addition, execution support was provided for aiming the lamps at each block of the field. These are some of the key elements that set the Company apart from other players in this field. In addition to this C&I has also set up a strong supply chain mechanism that enables short cycle time. Ferozeshah Kotla is a classic example where C&I completed execution well within the contractually stipulated time.
GE’s global repute and its track record for completing projects on time and within budget have been instrumental in swinging the order in its favor.
