Mr Sunil Behari Mathur, former Chairman, Life Insurance Corporation and a veteran insurance professional has taken over as Secretary General – Life Insurance Council effective today. Mr. S. V. Mony who spearheaded the Life Insurance Council for the past 40 months handed over the charge to Mr. Mathur.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. G. Prabhakara, Chairman, Life Insurance Council said: “We are delighted to have an experienced and a learned thought leader such as Mr. Mathur to guide and drive the life insurance sector in these evolving and critical times. I am sure Mr. Mathur would take the Council to greater heights. The Life Insurance Council puts on record its appreciation for Mr Mony’s distinguished contribution over a period of last three and half years.”
Under Mr. Mony’s leadership Life Insurance Council over a period of last 40 months made significant contribution to the industry initiating several initiatives such as: Mortality and Morbidity Investigation Centre under the Institute of Actuaries of India, reduction of compulsory hours for agents training to 50 hours, upgrading and making the declined lives database operational, in-house statistical data collation and publishing it on Council website and operationalising terminated agents database etc. The Council has been in the forefront in championing the cause of the life insurance sector with the Government and also in projecting a strong and responsive image of the industry.
Mr. Mathur served as the Chairman of the largest life insurance company in India – LIC for 26 months from August 2002. Post his retirement from LIC, the Government of India appointed Mr. Mathur as the Administrator of the Specified Undertaking of Unit Trust of India (SUUTI) in December 2004.
Mr. Mathur is also the non-executive Chairman of National Stock Exchange of India and is currently on the boards of leading corporates and financial services companies such as IL&FS, ITC, Grasim, HDIL, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.
