Mkts give up gains; end flat: Bank up, metal down

The markets ended on a disappointing note as they gave up most of their gains by the close of the session. Sensex slipped nearly 500 points from the day's high and Nifty was down 170 points. PNB was down 10%, REL down 8%, SAIL and BHEL down 7%, DLF down 6% from the day's high. Metal stocks were under some pressure followed by select power and FMCG stocks. Among the top gainers were stocks from the financial space followed by IT sector. HDFC, Sun Pharma, Hero Honda and JP Associates were among the gainers on the indices. Sensex closed up 96.49 points or 0.62% at 15723.11, and the Nifty up 14.65 points or 0.31% at 4754.20. About 1894 shares have advanced, 1108 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended flat at 6,400.37. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,901.91 up 0.5%. The BSE Bankex closed at 7,824.52 up 2%. IOB, ICICI Bank, Centurion bank, Axis closed in green. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed at 13,465.56 down 0.7%. Suzlon, Reliance Infra, Siemens, Triveni Engineering closed higher. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,539.11 up 1.5%. Apollo Tyres, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, Hind Motors closed higher. The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,499.48 down 2.3%. SAIL, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel, Jindal Stainless, Hind Zinc closed lower The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.7% at 2,319.93. Colgate, ITC, Nestle, Dabur ended lower. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 10,309.12 down 0.4%. BPCL, HPCL, IOC, Reliance Natura, GAIL ended lower The BSE IT Index was at 3,642.92 up 3%. HCL, Infosys, Tech mahindra, TCS, Tech Mahindra closed higher. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 11190.32 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 34170.35 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4942.49 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 50303.16 crore. 2:45 pm: The markets have given up some of its gains are off the day's highs.
