It was yet another disappointing day for the markets which traded on sluggish note in the first half today but cracked sharply in the late trade on the back of heavy selling witnessed across the sectors led by oil & gas, metal, realty and IT. Midcaps and smallcaps outperformed the frontline counters in early trade but could not maintain the gains and slipped sharply in late trade dragging the markets down. Finally Sensex and Nifty settled down deep in red.
On the volume front also, it was quite sluggish as it remained lowest this week. Market breadth was also negative. All the key BSE indices ended in red with significant cuts.
Sensex ended down 612.56 points or 3.38% at 17526.93, and the Nifty closed down 189.30 points or 3.56% at 5133.25. On BSE, about 879 shares advanced, 2077 shares declined, and 54 shares unchanged. BSE midcap ended down 2.38% at 7781.40 and Smallcap closed down 1.98% at 10206.57.
BSE auto index ended down 2.24% at 4790.36. In the auto space, top losers were Hind Motors, Exide Industries, maruti Suzuki.
BSE Bankex closed down 2.57% at 4880.35. Centurion bank, Axis bank and PNB were the top losers.
BSE capital good index ended down 2.6% at 16140.97. Crompton Greaves, Bharat Electric, LMW were top losers.
BSE FMCG index ended down 2.94% at 2124.99. Glaxo Smith, ITC, United Spirits were top losers.
BSE pharma index closed down 2.09% at 3641.60. Cadila, Nicholas Piramal, matrix Lab were top losers.
BSE IT index was down 2.82% at 3706.21. HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Satyam were top losers.
BSE metal index was down 3.95% at 15549.52. Jindal Steel, Hindalco and SAIL were the top losers.
BSE oil & gas index ended down 4.42% at 10668.05. RNRL, Petronen LNG, Reliance were top losers.
BSE power index was down 2.6% at 3779.56. Crompton Greaves, NTPC, Power Grid were top losers.
BSE realty index ended down 3.54% at 10046.35. Unitech, Omaxe, HDIl were top losers.

Mkts trading in deep red; realty, energy, metals plunge
The markets have given up some more points are trading weak on the back of heavy institutional selling in scrips across the sectors. All the BSE indices have slipped in deep red led by oil & gas, metal, IT and realty counters. Volume has been extremely low today and the merket breadth has worsened further. Poor opening of European markets have turned the sentiments negative dragging the markets down.
At 14.53 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 525.21 points or 2.90% at 17614.28, and the Nifty down 191.95 points or 3.61% at 5130.60. About 1122 shares have advanced, 1828 shares declined, and 60 shares are unchanged.
Acc was the only stock in Sensex in green. Cipla, Hindalco, L&T were down with over 4% decline.
In the realty space, top losers were Unitech, Omaxe, Anant Raj Industries. Among the oil & gas stocks, Reliance, Petronet LNG, ONGC and GAIL were the top losers.
Metal index was one another weak counter and SAIL, Hindalco, Jindal Steel and Tata Steel were the top losers in this space.
Market breadth has worsened further with only 380 stocks on the advancing side and over 850 stocks on the decline side. Rupee was quoting at 39.49 against US dollar.
Mkts plunge; Nifty breaches 5200 level
The markets have plunged sharply in last half an hour of trade on the back of huge selling across the board led by the FMCG, IT, metal, oil & gas, auto and realty stocks. All the key BSE indices barring smallcap index are trading in red with significant cuts. Midcap and smallcaps have also slipped sharply in line with frontline counters.
At 14.03 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 416.84 points or 2.30% at 17722.65, and the Nifty down 114.85 points or 2.16% at 5207.70. About 1370 shares have advanced, 1566 shares declined, and 74 shares are unchanged.
Market breadth has turned negative with nearly 550 stocks on the advancing side and over 650 stocks on the downside on NSE. Volume has been relatively very low today.
Top gainers on the Nifty are ACC at Rs 791 up 3.41%, Reliance Energy at Rs 2,120 up 3.07% and Tata Power at Rs 1,448 up 1.67%
Top losers on the Nifty are Hero Honda at Rs 694 down 3.26%, Satyam at Rs 396.60 down 2.78% and ITC at Rs 194.90 down 2.55%.
FMCG, oil & gas and metal index were trading with deep cut of over 2%. Auto, realty and IT indices were also under tremendous pressure and were trading with a loss of nearly 2% each.
Mkts slip; FMCG, IT, metal & auto stocks down
The markets have given up some points as some selling pressure was seen in the scrips across sectors led by FMCG, IT, auto, oil & gas and metal. Midcap and smallcap counters have shown relative outperformace in today's trade. Frontliners are still trading on subdued note. Fertlizer, cement stocks are still holding up the gains.
At 1:00 pm, the Sensex is down 83.54 points or 0.46% at 18055.95, and the Nifty down 28.85 points or 0.54% at 5293.70. About 2053 shares have advanced, 881 shares declined, and 76 shares are unchanged.
Market breadth is strong with advance decline ratio of over 4:1 on NSE. Volume so has not been very encouraging. Rupee was quoting at 39.47 against US dollar.

Mkts trading quiet; fertilizer, cement stocks in focus
The markets have been trading very sluggish since opening today as the frontline counters are looking lacklusure. However, the midcap and smallcap stocks are in focus and are trading with substantial gains. Fertilizers and cement stocks are in demand today.
At 12.20 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 10.19 points or 0.06% at 18149.68, and the Nifty up 15.35 points or 0.29% at 5337.90. About 2165 shares have advanced, 781 shares declined, and 64 shares are unchanged.
Market breadth is strong with advance decline ratio of over 4:1 on NSE. Volume so has not been very encouraging. Rupee was quoting at 39.47 against US dollar.
Top gainers on the Sensex are Reliance Energy at Rs 2,131.30 up 3.64%, ACC at Rs 790.50 up 3.35% and DLF at Rs 887.20 up 1.99%.
Top losers on the Sensex are Bajaj Auto at Rs 2,287.50 down 2.22%, Satyam at Rs 402.60 down 1.48% and Bharti Airtel at Rs 887.50 down 1.43%.
Reliance Natural, RPL, Reliance Energy and Future Capital are some of the very active counters today.
Market trades flat: Midcaps, power, metal up
It has been a sluggish session for the frontliners but there is plenty of activity seen in midcap stocks. Technology and oil & gas stocks were trading lower. Heavyweights Reliance and ONGC are dragging the markets lower. However midcap index is up over 1.5%.
Auto, IT and FMCG stocks are trading weak. Trading firm are power, cement, metal, fertiliser, realty and oil & gas stocks.
Barring Japan rest of the Asia is closed. Nikkei is trading flat. The cues from US were weak, Dow closed 65 points down.
At 11.30 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 11.29 points or 0.06% at 18128.20, and the Nifty down 0.65 points or 0.01% at 5321.90. About 2122 shares have advanced, 821 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.
In the midcap space Burnpur is up 17.5%, Future capital is up over 7% followed by Deccan Avaition, IndusInd Bk, Zee News that are seeing good buying on the bourses.
Among the top gainers are ACC up 3.83%, RPL up 2.5%, Grasim up 1.77% and DLF up 1.05% followed by BPCL, Hindalco, Infosys, PNB, Sun Pharma, NTPC, Unitech.
Bharti Airtel and Hero Honda down over 1.6%, Bajaj Auto, Cipla down over 1%. The other losers were M&M, TCS, Reiance, L&T, HUL, Satyam, ONGC.
Market opens flat: Midcaps, power, metal up
The markets opened weak on the back of quiet cues from global peers. Barring Japan rest of the Asia is closed. Nikkei is trading flat. The cues from US were weak, Dow closed 65 points down. Technology and oil & gas stocks were trading lower. Heavyweights Reliance and ONGC are dragging the markets lower. However midcap index has opened firm up nearly 1%.
At 10:00 am, Sensex was trading at 18130 down 10 points and Nifty was at 5317 down 5 points
Bharti, M&M, TCS, BPCL, Reiance, L&T, HUL, Satyam, ONGC were among the top laggards.
Hindalco, Infosys, PNB, Sun Pharma, NTPC, Unitech, Reliance Petroleum were among the gainers.
