Mkts end flat amid volatility: Metals, midcaps down

The markets ended the day flat amid a highly volatile session. After touching the 21,000 mark Sensex shed most of its gains. After a stellar performance in the past two weeks midcaps were looking tired and the midcap index ended deep red. This has gave markets negative breadth.

Metal stocks like Hindalco and Tata Steel are down over 3.5% each. Power stocks like Tata Power, NTPC and Reliance Energy ended in negative terrain. Buying was seen in select frontliners from FMCG and oil & gas space.

Sensex touched 21,000 mark in the opening trade. It took 49 days for Sensex to cover the 1000 points journey from 20,000-21,000. Reliance, ITC and ICICI Bank were among the top contributors.

The rally has been clearly driven by domestic funds and FIIs were seen as net sellers. In this rally from 20,000 from 21,000 the midcap index is 28% and the smallcap index is up 41%.

Sensex closed up 60.68 points or 0.29% at 20873.33, and the Nifty up 8.75 points or 0.14% at 6287.85.

About 567 shares have advanced, 2373 shares declined, and 13 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,817.07 down 3%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 13,516.13 down 3.3%.

The BSE Bankex was down 1% at 12,086.57.  Andhra Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Allahabad Bank, Centurion Bank, IOB, Bank of Baroda, Federal moved downwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed flat at 20,214.92. Greaves Cotton, Astra Microwave, Carborundum, Bharat Elec, Jyoti Structure closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,594.26 down 1%. Hind Motors, Punj Tractors, TVS Motor, Amtek Auto, Apollo Tyres closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 19,538.34 down 3%. NALCO, Shree Precoated, Hindalco, Tata Steel, Jindal Saw lower.

The BSE FMCG Index closed flat at 2,505.11. Tata Tea, Dabur India, Marico, Colgate, Bata India closed lower.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 14,051.27 up 0.5%. Reliance Natura, ONGC, Reliance ended in green.
 
BSE power index closed at 4,806.12 up 3%. Torrent Power, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Power Grid Corp, Crompton Greave ended in green.

The BSE IT Index was up 1% at 4,244.75. Satyam, Mphasis, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 25405.20 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 84355.67 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 11823.57 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 121584.44 crore.

Mkt witnesses volatility: Midcaps, smallcaps plunge

The markets have slipped in red on account of selling pressure in index pivitols. Midcaps and smallcaps have taken it on their chin and both the indices are down over 3%.

Profit booking is seen in the broader markets with both the smallcap and smallcap index down over 1.5%. Power stocks like Tata Power, NTPC and Reliance Energy are trading weak. Metal stocks like Hindalco and Tata Steel are down over 4% each.

Buying is seen in frontliners from FMCG and oil & gas space. After touching the 21,000 mark Sensex has shed some of its gains and is hovering around 20,900 levels. After a stellar performance in the past two weeks midcaps are looking tired and the midcap index is in red. This has given markets a distinctly negative breadth.

At 14.32 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 94.94 points or 0.46% at 20717.71, and the Nifty down 40.05 points or 0.64% at 6239.05.

About 503 shares have advanced, 2428 shares declined, and 22 shares are unchanged.

Top losers on the Sensex  and Nifty were NTPC, Hindalco, Tata Steel, BPCL, Cairn India, Grasim and Reliance Energy.

Among the top gainers Suzlon, SBI, HDFC Bank, Reliance, Reliance Communication, ONGC, L&T and SBI are among the top gainers on the indices. Bharti, M&M, ITC and Satyam were among the other gainers.

Mkts in green: FMCG, oil up; Midcaps, metal down

The markets are trading in green on the back of buying seen in frontliners from FMCG and oil & gas space. After touching the 21,000 mark Sensex has shed some of its gains and is hovering around 20,900 levels. After a stellar performance in the past two weeks midcaps are looking tired and the midcap index is in red. This has given markets a distinctly negative breadth.

At 12.34 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 87.30 points or 0.42% at 20899.95, and the Nifty up 25.65 points or 0.41% at 6304.75.

About 746 shares have advanced, 2183 shares declined, and 23 shares are unchanged.

Profit booking is seen in select IT, metal realty, pharma and auto stocks.

Mkts slip on profit booking; midcap index in red

The markets have given up most of its opening gains and the Nifty slipped in red for some time on the back of heavy profit booking seen in the IT, metal realty, pharma and auto stocks. Midcaps and smallcaps were witnessing heavy selling pressure, however largecaps were showing some resilience.

At 11.11 am, the Sensex is up 34.12 points or 0.16% at 20846.77, and the Nifty down 3.75 points or 0.06% at 6275.35. About 859 shares have advanced, 2053 shares declined, and 38 shares are unchanged.

Most BSE indices were trading in red except oil & gas and cap good index. Market breadth has turned into deep negative with over 900 stocks on the down side and only 200 stocks on the advancing side on NSE.

Top gainers on the Sensex were HDFC Bank at Rs 1,692.05 up 2.12%, Bharti Airtel at Rs 956.35 up 2.11% and SBI at Rs 2,452 up 2.04%. 

Top losers on the Sensex were NTPC at Rs 262 down 2.53%, Hindalco at Rs 213.15 down 1.84% and Reliance Energy at Rs 2,539.80 down 1.72%.

In the IT space, Satyam, I-Flex, patni Comp and HCL Tech were leading gainers. In the oil & gas sector, RNRL, Essar Oil, ONGC, Reliance Petroelum and GAIL were leading from the front and were trading with significant gains.

RNRL, RPL, Reliance, Manaksia were some of the most active stocks on the bourses today.  

Mkts strong & stable; IT, oil, FMCG stocks up

The markets have slipped little bit after a strong opening but were still trading strong and stable. IT, oil and gas, power, realty and FMCG stocks were attracting good amount of attention.

Market breadth was positive with over 650 stocks on the advancing side and nearly 525 stocks on the downside. Volume in the morning trade so far has been good. Manaksia got listed on the bourses at Rs 180 versus its issue price of Rs  160. Rupee was quoting at 39.27 against USD.

At 10.25 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 176.97 points or 0.85% at 20989.62, and the Nifty up 52.40 points or 0.83% at 6331.50. About 1934 shares have advanced, 973 shares declined, and 42 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Nifty were Suzlon Energy at Rs 2,236 up 2.98%, Reliance Comm at Rs 812 up 2.78% and HDFC Bank at Rs 1,698 up 2.57%. 

Top losers on the Nifty were Hindalco at Rs 215.05 down 1.35%, ICICI Bank at Rs 1,351 down 0.85% and NTPC at Rs 266.65 down 0.8%.

In the IT space, Satyam, I-Flex, patni Comp and HCL Tech were leading gainers. In the oil & gas sector, RNRL, Essar Oil, ONGC, Reliance Petroelum and GAIL were leading from the front and were trading with significant gains.

Sensex conquers 21K in opening trade

The markets opened on very strong note and the Sensex conquers 21K in opening trade for the first time ever. There was some help from the global cues also. Good amount of buying was witnessed across the sectors led by the capital goods, banking, realty and sugar. Manaksia got listed on the bourses at Rs 180 versus its issue price of Rs  160. 

At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 218 points at 21030 and Nifty was up 67.40 points at 6346.52. Major gainers in the opening move were Reliance, RNRL, Rel Cap, ICICI bank, Bharti Airtel and Dr Reddy's Lab.

Asian markets trading mixed. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.27% or 345.75 points at 27,525.24. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted gained 1.49% or 117.69 points at 8,001.06. Singapore's Straits Times was up 0.46% or 15.50 points at 3,368.56. However, Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.29% or 41.81 points at 14,458.74 and South Korea's Seoul Composite was flat at 1,829.77

US markets: The Dow Jones industrial average gained 27.31 points, or 0.21%, to 12,827.49. The S&P 500 index shot up 4.55 points, or 0.32%, to 1,416.18, and the tech-focused Nasdaq composite index slipped 5.19 points, or 0.21%, to 2,499.46.

Market cues:

  • FIIs net buy USD126.1 million in equity
  • NSE F&O Open Interest up by Rs 5714 crore at Rs 1.29 lakh crore
