Mkt ends in red: Bank, oil & gas, IT stocks down

The markets ended in red after a highly volatile session. After opening weak the markets showed some strength and moved higher. But couldn't hold its position at the higher levels and closed in red. Sensex was 350 points from the day's high, Nifty slipped over 100 points from the day's high. The cues from Asia were mixed with Shanghai and Taiwan ending lower. Banking, oil & gas and IT indices were among the major laggards. Sensex was down 167.29 points or 0.84% at 19700.82, and the Nifty down 22.55 points or 0.38% at 5913.20. About 2045 shares have advanced, 889 shares declined, and 45 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,340.01 up 0.8%. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 12,740.29 down 1.7%. The BSE Bankex ended at 11,971.14 down 1.6%. ICICI Bank, Centurion Bank, HDFC Bank, Federal Bank, Canara Bank moved downwards. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 1.4% at 18,931.82. Triveni Engg, Siemens, L&T, Thermax closed lower. The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,307.74 up 0.7%. Hind Motors, Bharat Forge, Tube Investment, Maruti Suzuki, Apollo Tyres closed lower. The BSE Metal Index closed at 18,147.00 up 0.7%. NALCO, Shree Precoated, Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, JindalStainless closed higher. The BSE FMCG Index closed up 1.8% at 2,347.27. Colgate, ITC, Bata India, Godrej Consumer, HUL, GlaxoSmith Con closed higher. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 13,381.37 down 2%. Reliance Natura, HPCL, RPL,ONGC, Reliance, ONGC ended in red The BSE IT Index was down 0.8% at 3,853.54. I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Mphasis, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 20487.3 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 67865.55 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7703.59 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 96056.44 crore. Mkts choppy: Maruti, ITC, L&T top gainers The markets are trading flat amid choppiness giving up some of its gains. The cues from Asia were mixed with Shanghai and Taiwan ending lower. With strong buying seen in broader markets the breadth is healthy in favour of the advances. Buying is seen in capital goods, FMCG, metal, power and midcap stocks. Sugar stocks have hogged the limelight and are trading higher. Bank, oil & gas and realty stocks are under pressure. At 14.39 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 41.01 points or 0.21% at 19909.12, and the Nifty up 38.35 points or 0.65% at 5974.10. About 2317 shares have advanced, 607 shares declined, and 55 shares are unchanged. ICICI Bank, HDFC and HDFC Bank are reeling under pressure. L&T, Siemens, ABB, BHEL are trading in green providing support at the lower levels. Maruti, ITC, L&T, ACC, HUL, M&M, Nalco are among the top frontline gainers on the indices. Ranbaxy, Reliance, TCS, DLF, ICICI Bank, Ambuja Cements, Tata Power, HDFC Bank are among the frontline laggards on the indices. RPL, RNRL, Reliance Industries were some of the most active counters today. Reliance has come out with good set of Q3 FY08 result. The company has reported standalone Q3 net profit of Rs 3882 crore. Banking, realty, oil & gas and metal indices are weak since morning today. Market breadth has improved, over 800 stocks were on the advancing side and nearly 350 stocks on the downside. Volume has been slightly lower today. At 11.24 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 21.71 points or 0.11% at 19846.40, and the Nifty up 3.05 points or 0.05% at 5938.80. About 1729 shares have advanced, 1187 shares declined, and 63 shares are unchanged. Top gainers on the Sensex are HUL at Rs 218.55 up 1.67%, ACC at Rs 869.50 up 1.52% and Mah and Mah at Rs 749 up 1.35%. Top losers on the Sensex are ICICI Bank at Rs 1,323.75 down 3.32%, DLF at Rs 1,100 down 2.45% and HDFC Bank at Rs 1,635 down 2.44%. Mkts open flat; bank, power, metal stocks down The markets opened in green but drifted down in red within few minutes of opening on the back of heavy selling in the banking, oil and telecom space. At 9:57 am, Sensex was down 60 points at 19807 and Nifty was down 11 points at 5924. Major gainers in the opening trade were BHEL, RPL, NTPC, Ranbaxy,ACC and Unitech. Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank were among the losers. Asian markets were trading firm. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.64% or 400.48 points at 24,851.33. Japan's Nikkei gained 1.13% or 152.44 points at 13,656.95. South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 0.47% or 7.99 points at 1,712.96. However, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted declined 0.35% or 28.96 points at 8,150.58 US markets: The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 34.95 points, or 0.28%, to 12,466.16. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 7.75 points, or 0.56%, to 1,373.20, and the Nasdaq composite index ended down 23 points, or 0.95%, at 2,394.59.
