Mkt ends with marginal gains: Sensex inching towards 17K

The markets ended with marginal gains after seeing some hicups in the noon trades. It was a dull day for markets as they selling pressure was seen in realty, auto and banking stocks. Markets made smart recovery from the day's low, Sensex saw a triple digit correction in noon but was up again by the end of the day to end almost flat. Oil marketing companies were the standout performance with HPCL, BPCL and IOC were among the top gainers.

It was some profit booking at the higher levels and Nifty holding above the  4,900 mark. The market breadth was negative as the midcap and smallcap indices underperformed.

Bharti, Hindalco and Cipla are among the top gainers on the indices. PSU refineries HPCL and BPCL have surged on the bourses.

Among the top losers are Bajaj Auto, Hero Honda, Reliance Petro, GAIL, Maruti Udyog and SBI.

Dollar has gained some strength against the rupee helping the IT stocks to stabilise.

Sensex was up 53.71 points or 0.32% at 16899.54, and the Nifty up 6.65 points or 0.13% at 4938.85.

About 1228 shares have advanced, 1735 shares declined, and 69 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 7,313.33 up 0.04%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,967.51 up 0.05%.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.5% at 8,921.74. Oriental Bank, Centurion Bank, Allahabad Bank, Karnataka Bank, Bank of Baroda moved downwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.5% at 14,763.61. Areva T&D, Punj Lloyd, Alstom Projects, Bharat Bijlee, AIA Engineering closed lower.

The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.6% at 3,687.60.   Nicholas Pirama,  Lupin, Divis Labs, Cadila Health  closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,252.96 down 1%. Tube Investment, Hero Honda, TVS Motor, Mah and Mah, Escorts closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,080.83 up 0.4%. JSW Steel, Jindal Saw, Hindalco, Hind Zinc, JindalStainless  closed higher

The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,156.35 up 0.1%. United Spirits, Dabur India, United Brewerie, Colgate, HUL
 closed higher.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 9,777.51 up 1.3%. Petronet LNG, Essar Oil, BPCL, IOC, HPCL ended in red.

The BSE IT Index closed flat at 4,348.62. Satyam, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys closed lower.

The BSE realty Index lost 3% at 9,085.47. Unitech,  Phoenix Mills, Ansal Propertie, Mahindra Gesco, DLF closed lower.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 17784.95 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 83677.53 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7468.09 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 108930.57 crore.

Market trades flat: Realty, auto, bank stocks down

The markets is trading flat on account of selling pressure is seen in realty, auto and banking stocks. Buying was witnessed in the metal, pharma, telecom and power stocks.

At 3:31 hrs IST, the Sensex was down 12.64 points or 0.08% at 16833.19, and the Nifty down 7.35 points or 0.15% at 4924.85.

About 1157 shares have advanced, 1808 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.

It is a gentle drift down from the higher levels and Nifty has breached the 4,900 mark. The market breadth is negative as the midcap space is crumbling a itdown over 1%. It has got into the lower groove of the momentum a Sensex and Nifty are trading near day's low.

Mkts steady; Ranbaxy, Bharti top Sensex gainers

The markets continue to trade steady with modest gains. However, some fresh buying was witnessed in the metal, pharma, telecom and power stocks. IT stocks are still under pressure.

At 12.45 pm, the Sensex is up 48.63 points or 0.29% at 16894.46, and the Nifty up 10.05 points or 0.20% at 4942.25.

About 1322 shares have advanced, 1620 shares declined, and 90 shares are unchanged.

Rupee was quoting at 39.78. Market breadth on the NSE was negative with 486 stocks on the advancing side and over 653 stocks on the decline side.

Top gainers on the Sensex are Ranbaxy Labs at Rs 427 up 2.42%, Bharti Airtel at Rs 967 up 2.34% and Reliance Energy at Rs 1,117 up 2.13%

Top losers on the Sensex are Bajaj Auto at Rs 2,533 down 1.59%, HUL at Rs 220 down 1.59% and ITC at Rs 185.65 down 1.17%

Most active shares on BSE are IFCI at Rs 103.50 with 18,796,328 shares, Reliance Natural at Rs 93.80 with 18,809,192 shares and GMR Infra at Rs 877.45 with 1,277,985 shares.

BSE Midcap was up at 7332.76 up 22.62 points and BSE 100 was up 20.46 points at 8772.29.

Markets steady; tech, pharma, auto stocks down

The markets are strady now after early choppiness today. Technology, pharma and cements stocks are trading under pressure, however metal, banking, oil & gas and power stocks were up.

The market breadth was negative with 1293 stocks on the advancing side and over 1662 stocks on the decline side. Sep Nifty future was trading with a discount of 2.92 points at 4935. Rupee was quoting at 39.78.

At 11.26 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 68.43 points or 0.41% at 16914.26, and the Nifty up 13.10 points or 0.27% at 4945.30. About 1322 shares have advanced, 1630 shares declined, and 80 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are HDFC Bank at Rs 1,359 up  0.95%, Tata Steel at Rs 754.90 up 0.80% and Bharti Airtel at Rs 952 up 0.76%.

Top losers on the Sensex are Ambuja Cements at Rs 146 down 1.48%, Reliance Energy at Rs 1,080 down 1.25% and Wipro at Rs 437.30 down 1.23%. 

Top gainers on the Nifty BPCL at Rs 355.90 up 9.19%, HPCL at Rs 263 up 2.57% and SAIL at Rs 202.25 up 2.12%. 

Top losers on the Nifty are Reliance Petro at Rs 160.35 down 4.21%, Hero Honda at Rs 752.05 down 2.06% and Suzlon Energy at Rs 1,421.30 down 1.65%. 

BSE IT index was down. Major losers were Mphasis at 272 down 1.91%, Patni Computer at 447.05 down 1.55% and I-Flex Solution at 1,835 down 1.01% and Wipro at 439.35 down 0.77%.  

Mkts choppy in early trade; tech stocks down

The markets have opened on quiet and choppy note in line with its Asian peers. The metals, oil & gas and capital goods were in focus today, however technology pack was pulling the markets down.

At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 64 points at 16910 and Nifty was up 10 points at 4942. Major gainers in the early trade were Rel Comm, Reliance Natural, NTPC, ONGC, BPCL, Rel Energy, SAIL and M&M. However, most of the technology stocks were trading weak.

Asian markets are trading mixed. Japan's Nikkei average slipped 0.14% or 22.95 points at 16,289.66. Straits Times gained 0.01% or 0.52 points at 3,639.54. Taiwan Weighted was up 1.36% or 122.25 points at 9,105.28. However, Shanghai Composite slipped 0.27% or 14.57 points at 5,470.44. Hong Kong Hang Seng jumped 31.86 points or 0.12% at 26,520.08. Jakarta Composite was down 0.73% or 17.24 points at 2,336.39.

US Markets: The Dow Jones industrials fell 61.13 points, or 0.44%, to 13,759.06. Broader indicators fell, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index declining 8.02 points, or 0.53%, to 1,517.73, while the Nasdaq composite index lost 3.27 points, or 0.12%, to 2,667.95.
