The markets closed in green with moderate gains amid a rangebound session. The opening was firm but some profit booking was seen in the last hour of trade. Nifty closed flat just below 4900 mark. Technology stocks have continued the uptrend and outperformed the frontline indices. Market breadth was positive. Midcap were the show stealers as they outperformed the benchmark indices. Buying support was seen from technology, telecom, realty, power, oil and banking stocks. Capital goods stocks witnessed some profit booking while, auto and FMCG stocks were trading sluggish.
Sensex closed up 90.53 points or 0.56% at 16244.19, and the Nifty up 7.65 points or 0.16% at 4887.30.
About 1924 shares have advanced, 871 shares declined, and 279 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,699.10 up 1.4%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,351.14 up 1.8%.
The BSE Bankex ended at 8,043.71 up 0.6%. Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Oriental Bank, Allahabad Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.5% at 13,352.06. BHEL, L&T, Astra Microwave, BEML, Crompton Greave, Thermax, Greaves Cotton, Areva T&D closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed flat at 4,466.17. Escorts, TVS Motor, Amtek Auto, Cummins, Punj Tractors, MRF closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 14,134.32 up 1%. Hind Zinc, Sterlite, NALCO, Shree Precoated, Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, JindalStainless closed higher.
The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.4% at 2,372.69. Colgate, ITC, Bata India, Godrej Consumer, HUL, GlaxoSmith Con closed lower.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 11,422.02 up 0.8%. GAIL, Reliance Natura, HPCL, RPL,ONGC, Reliance, ONGC ended in green.
BSE power index closed at 3,207.81 down 0.5%. Torrent Power, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Power Grid Corp, Crompton Greave ended in red.
The BSE IT Index was up 3.7% at 4,006.50. Wipro, I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Mphasis, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 14830.51 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 39646.97 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 6773.6 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 61251.08 crore.
Mkts off highs: IT, metal up; cap goods down
The markets are off the highs and have given up most of its gains to trade flat. Technology stocks have continued the uptrend and outperformed the frontline indices. Market breadth is positive. Nifty has slipped into the red. Midcap have stolen the show and have outperformed the benchmark indices. Buying support is seen from technology, telecom, realty, power, oil and banking stocks. Capital goods stocks are witnessing some profit booking while, auto and FMCG stocks are trading flat.
At 14.46 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 146.59 points or 0.91% at 16300.25, and the Nifty up 23.50 points or 0.48% at 4903.15.
About 2051 shares have advanced, 737 shares declined, and 286 shares are unchanged.
Among the frontline stocks HCL Tech was up over 6% followed by Infosys up over 5%, Satyam, Reliance Energy were up over 3% each.
While Ambuja Cements, ONGC, HUL and Suzlon Energy were among the top laggards.
Midcap and small cap stocks are trading strong, both indices up over 2% each.
Orchid Chemicals, RNRL, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industries were most active shares.
BSE IT Index surged over 3%, TEck and Realty up more than 2%, Power, Metal, Oil & Gas up over 1%. Capital Goods index is down 1%.
Mkts still in green: Infosys, Satyam, HCL Tech surge

About 2041 shares have advanced, 741 shares declined, and 292 shares are unchanged.
Among the frontline stocks HCL Tech was up over 6% followed by Infosys up over 5%, Satyam, Reliance Energy were up over 3% each.
While Ambuja Cements, ONGC, HUL and Suzlon Energy were among the top laggards.

10:28 am: Mkts surge; midcap, IT, realty, power stocks strong
The markets have held morning strong gains and trading in positive terrain with strong support from technology, telecom, realty, power, oil and banking stocks. Midcap and small cap stocks continued their upward momentum. Market breadth is positive, nearly 9:1. On the global front, Asian markets are trading positive.
At 10.28 hrs IST, the Sensex was up 220.91 points or 1.37% at 16374.57, and the Nifty up 53.50 points or 1.10% at 4933.15. About 2116 shares have advanced, 671 shares declined, and 287 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the bourses were Reliance Enery, Infosys, Satyam and HCL Tech while losers - Ambuja Cements, ONGC, HUL and Suzlon Energy.
Midcap and small cap stocks are trading strong, both indices up over 2% each.
Orchid Chemicals, RNRL, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industries were most active shares.

At 9:56 am -The markets have continued yesterday's rally further on the back of positive global cues and buying interest in technology, power, capital goods, pharma and real estate stocks. Market breadth is strong.
At 9:56 am, the Sensex was up 190 points at 16,377 and the Nifty up 61 points at 4,940.
Gainers are Satyam, Infosys, HCL Tech, Wipro, Unitech, L&T, Ranbaxy, Tata Power, ABB, DLF, Cairn, Bharti, HDFC and Tata Steel.
Midcap and Small cap stocks are also getting buying interest, indices up over 1% each.
Mastek gained nearly 14% in morning trade after buyback offer, which will open on April 28 and price of offer will not exceed Rs 750 per share.
All BSE indices are trading in the green. BSE IT and TEck indices were up 3% and 2% respectively. Realty, Capital Goods, Power and Metal indices rose over 1%.
Asian markets were trading higher. Japan's Nikkei surged 1.42% or 184.04 points at 13,174.62. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.84% or 201.39 points at 24,102.72. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.76% or 67.63 points at 8,992.41. Singapore's Straits Times rose 1.32% or 40.48 points at 3,096.97. South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 0.90% or 15.63 points at 1,757.80.
US markets rose for the first time in three days, on better-than-forecast earnings at regional banks and record prices for oil and gasoline. The gain was led by financial and energy shares. Dow gained 60 points to close at 12,362. The Nasdaq shut 10 points higher at 2,286.
