It was an extremely volatile session for the markets but they managed to close in the green. Buying support came in from realty, pharma and IT stocks. On a weekly basis Sensex was up 3% and Nifty up 4%. BSE Realty index up 9% followed by metals, IT and healthcare up 5%.
Tata Power, GAIL, REL, HPCL, Wipro, Rel Communication were among the top gainers. Hero Honda, Grasim, ACC were top weekly losers
Essar Steel, Ispat, Chambal, Dish TV, Nagarjuna Fertilisers were the midcap gainers during the week.
In today's session along with FMCG major ITC metal pivotals like Hindalco and Tata Steel were down.
Sensex was up 170.13 points or 0.86% at 19966.00, and the Nifty up 19.60 points or 0.33% at 5974.30.
About 1563 shares have advanced, 1461 shares declined, and 61 shares are unchanged.
In the midcap space top losers were Ispat Ind, Nagajuna Fertilisers, Tata Tele, RNRL, Deccan Aviation.
Among the top gainers on the indices were Bharti Airtel up 4.5%, DLF up 2.7%, Infosys up 3%, Unitech, HDFC and VSNL were each up over 2.5%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,021.96 down 0.1%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 11,342.27 down 0.2%.
The BSE Bankex was up 2.5% at 11,377.96. IOB, Bank of Baroda, Karnataka Bk, Allahabad bank, Kotak Bank moved downwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1% at 20,218.88. Astra Microwave, Reliance Infra, Crompton Greave, AIA Engineering, Gammon India, Lakshmi Machine closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,651.30 down 1%. Mico, Amtek, Escorts, TVS Motor, Hind Motors, Exide Industrie, Ashok Leyland closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 18,738.08 down 1%. Hindalco, Shree Precoated, JindalStainless, Hind Zinc, SAIL closed lower.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,177.25 down 1%. ITC, Nestle, United Spirits, Godrej Consumer closed lower.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 12,735.33 down 1%. Reliance Natura, Reliance, GAIL, IOC, HPCL, Petronet LNG, Essar Oil ended in red.
The BSE IT Index was up 4% at 4,424.57. Infosys, TCS, Financial Tech, Tech Mahindra, I-Flex Solution, Wipro, Mphasis closed higher.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 20572.90 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 61359.41 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 8625.98 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 90558.29 crore.
Mkts witness volatility: Energy, FMCG stocks down
The markets are witnessing volatility and the Nifty is hovering near its previous close. Sensex is up over 100 points recovering 150 points from the day's low. Most of the BSE sector indices are in red. Along with FMCG major ITC metal pivotal like Hindalco and Tata Steel are down. Select buying is seen in bank, pharma, IT and realty stocks.
At 14.39 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 130.05 points or 0.66% at 19925.92, and the Nifty up 2.15 points or 0.04% at 5956.85.
About 1489 shares have advanced, 1535 shares declined, and 61 shares are unchanged.
In the midcap space top losers were Ispat Ind, Nagajuna Fertilisers, Tata Tele, RNRL, Deccan Aviation, Gas Authority.
Among the top gainers on the indices were Bharti Airtel up 4.5%, DLF up 2.7%, Infosys up 3%, Unitech, HDFC and VSNL are each up over 2.5%.

Mkts lose further ground: ITC, NTPC, Tata Steel down
The markets have lost further ground with Nifty slipping in red and Sensex trading flat. The breadth has turned negative with broader markets in red. Most of the BSE sector indices are in red. Along with FMCG major ITC power stocks NTPC and Reliance Energy are down. Select buying is seen in bank, pharma, IT and realty stocks.
Oil & gas, power, consumer durables and capital goods were under pressure.
At 1.55 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 5.79 points or 0.03% at 19801.66, and the Nifty down 15.30 points or 0.26% at 5939.40.
About 1427 shares have advanced, 1596 shares declined, and 62 shares are unchanged.

The markets are off the morning highs on some profit booking seen at the higher levels. Sensex is trading with moderate gains and Nifty is trading flat. The market breadth is even at 1:1. Most of the BSE sector indices are in red. Select buying is seen in bank, pharma, IT and realty stocks. Oil & gas, power, consumer durables and capital goods were under pressure.
At 12.35 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 79.82 points or 0.40% at 19875.69, and the Nifty up 3.20 points or 0.05% at 5957.90.
About 1757 shares have advanced, 1269 shares declined, and 59 shares are unchanged.
Broader markets are quiet, both the BSE midcap and smallcap indicesa re trading flat.

ITC, AMbuja Cement and Tata Steel were among the top laggards each down over 1.5%. GAIL and SAIL are also trading weak down 2.7% amd 2.5% each.

IT sector has been attracting some good attention today. major gainers in this counter were Tech mahindra at Rs 1174 up Rs 60.10, Infosys at Rs 1678 up Rs 43.10 and i Flex Sol at Rs 1565.45 up Rs 38.30.
Mkts under selling pressure; realty, IT stocks still firm
The markets have given up most of its early gains today on account of heavy profit booking witnessed at the higher levels. Oil & gas, power, consumer durables and capital goods were under pressure and the respective BSE indices were trading in red with mild cut. However, the realty and IT stocks were still firm.
At 11.25 am, the Sensex is up 85.42 points or 0.43% at 19881.29, and the Nifty up 11.70 points or 0.20% at 5966.40. About 1917 shares have advanced, 1094 shares declined, and 74 shares are unchanged.
Market breadth on BSE and NSE were still positive. On NSE, there were 658 stocks on the advancing side and 568 stocks on the decline side. Midcap were into severe trouble. Midcap index slipped into mild red after a very good start.
Top gainers on the Nifty are VSNL at Rs 653 up 4.20%, Bharti Airtel at Rs 978.50 up 4.02% and Unitech at Rs 445.85 up 3.64%.
Top losers on the Nifty are SAIL at Rs 272.95 down 2.5%, ONGC at Rs 1,172.05 down 2.05% and HPCL at Rs 301.25 down 2.03%.

Mkts give up some gains; FMCG stocks under pressure
The markets have give up some of its early gains but were still trading strong. All the key indices were in green, however the realty, metal and banking stocks were in focus. FMCG stocks were under pressure.
At 10.48 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 107.87 points or 0.54% at 19903.74, and the Nifty up 22.50 points or 0.38% at 5977.20. About 2055 shares have advanced, 956 shares declined, and 74 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Nifty are Unitech at Rs 444.85 up 3.41%, Tata Power at Rs 1,344.25 up 3.40% and Bharti Airtel at Rs 969.15 up 3.03%.
Top losers on the Nifty are Ambuja Cements at Rs 151.60 down 1.53%, ONGC at Rs 1,178.85 down 1.48% and SAIL at Rs 276.60 down 1.2%.
BSE FMCG index was trading in mild green. Glaxosmith Con was down Rs 13.75 at Rs 670 and ITC was down Rs 1.6 at Rs 191.05.
Relaty space continue to remain in action and the index was up over 2.5%. Major gainers in this space were Peninsula landat 152.20 up Rs 10.55, Phoenix Mill at Rs 2550 up 142.5 and Mahindra Life at Rs 774.90 up Rs 36.70.
Reliance Petro, Rel Comm, RIL, Bharti, Rel Energy, Unitech and Infosys were some of the most active counters on the bourses today.
Mkts open on strong note; realty, telecom, banks up
The markets opened on strong note today on the back of strong cues from the global markets. US markets rallied yesterday after President Bush outlines housing plan. Asia was also trading strong. Metal, telecom, bank and realty stocks were firm in the early trade.
At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 263 points at 20063 and Nifty was up 82 points at 6037. Major gainers in the early trade were RComm, Infosys, DLF, Cipla, Ranbaxy, Tisco, Bajaj Auto, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Rel Energy.
Asian markets were trading firm. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.92% or 272.95 points at 29,831.87, Japan's Nikkei gained 0.93% or 147.04 points at 16,021.12, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.67% or 58.60 points at 8,753.01, Singapore's Straits Times surged 1.54% or 54.86 points at 3,607.41. However, South Korea's Seoul Composite was down 0.62% or 12.11 points at 1,941.06.
US markets: Wall Street has rallied for 2nd day running after President Bush outlines housing plan. The Dow gained 174.93 points, or 1.30%, to 13,619.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 22.33 points, or 1.50%, to 1,507.34, and the Nasdaq composite index shot up 42.67 points, or 1.60%, to 2,709.30.
