It was an extremely weak session for the markets as they closed deep in red. Indian markets were among the worst performers in Asia. In the last leg of trade heavy profit booking set in taking Nifty below 6,100 mark.
Banking, IT, FMCG, power and capital good stocks were among the top losers. Broader markets also lost all their strength they showed in the initial trade. Midcap and smallcap indices closed in red.
On the primary market front, Reliance Power is subscribed by over 9 times getting bids worth Rs 88,000 crore.
Among the top losers Bharti was down 6%, ICICI Bank down 4%, Suzlon, Sterlite are down over 3%.
Sensex closed down 476.96 points or 2.30% at 20251.09, and the Nifty down 132.55 points or 2.14% at 6074.25.
About 1032 shares have advanced, 1910 shares declined, and 34 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,431.89 down 1%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 12,755.29 down 0.8%.
The BSE Bankex ended down 2.4% at 12,258.42. Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Karnataka Bank, Canara Bank, Andhra Bank moved downwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 2% at 19,146.91. Suzlon, Triveni Engg, Praj Industries, Astra Microwave, Reliance Infra, BEML, Jyoti Structure closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,335.30 down 1%. Hind Motors, Punj Tractors, Apollo Tyres, TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 18,610.63 down 1.3%. NALCO, Shree Precoated, Hindalco, Tata Steel, SAIL, Jindal Saw lower.
The BSE FMCG Index closed down 2.3% at 2,354.16. United Breweries, Nestle, United Spirits, Tata Tea, Marico, Bata India closed lower.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 13,856.48 down 2%. Reliance Natura, HPCL, Essar OIl, RPL,ONGC, Reliance ended in red
BSE power index closed at 4,632.27 down 2.5%. Torrent Power, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Power Grid Corp, Crompton Greave ended in red.
The BSE IT Index was down 2% at 3,910.75. I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 19186.66 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 65569.15 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 8139.2 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 92895.01 crore.
Mkts plunge: Bharti, ICICI Bk, M&M top losers
In the last leg of trades the markets have slipped deeper in the red on selling seen in scrips aacross sectors. Sensex is down over 450 points and Nifty is down over 130 points.
Banking, IT and capital good stocks are among the top losers. The cues from Asia were not very encouraging as most of the Asia closed lower. Broader markets are also losing the strength they showed in the initial trade. Midcap and smallcap indices are trading in red.
At 15.07 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 433.89 points or 2.09% at 20294.16, and the Nifty down 123.95 points or 2.00% at 6082.85.
About 1133 shares have advanced, 1802 shares declined, and 40 shares are unchanged.
In the midcap space Godrej Ind down 8%, Axis Bank down 6% and Adlabs down 5% are the top losers
In the realty space Parsvnath, Omaxe, Ansal API are the top losers
Bharti down 6%, ICICI Bank down 4%, Suzlon, Sterlite are down over 3%.
Maruti Suzuki, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, VSNL, PNB, ACC and Tata Power were among the top gainers on the bourses.

Mkts in deep red: Bharti, ICICI Bk, M&M top losers

At 2:40 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 300.30 points or 1.45% at 20427.75, and the Nifty down 71.65 points or 1.15% at 6135.15.
About 1370 shares have advanced, 1561 shares declined, and 44 shares are unchanged.

Mkts witness profit booking: Bharti, ICICI Bank top losers

Sensex is down over 400 points and Nifty is down over 130 points from the day's high.

Mkts slip in red; Rel Power subscribed over 6.7 times
The markets have slipped in red on the back of profit booking taking place in the early trade coupled with weak cues from the Asian markets. Banking, IT and metal stocks were trading weak, however realty, power and metal stocks were attracting some buying interest.
At 10.30 am, the Sensex is down 58.83 points or 0.28% at 20669.22, and the Nifty down 15.65 points or 0.25% at 6191.15. About 1787 shares have advanced, 1129 shares declined, and 56 shares are unchanged. Midcap and smallcap stocks have started outperforming the frontliners after few days of consolidation.
Rupee was quoting at 39.26 against US dollar. Market breadth was in positive with over 800 stocks on the advancing side and nearly 320 stocks on the downside.
Top gainers on the Sensex were ACC at Rs 890.05 up 1.62%, Tata Steel at Rs 850.50 up 1.38% and DLF at Rs 1,216.90 up 0.94%.
Top losers on the Sensex were Bharti Airtel at Rs 874.90 down 3.57%, ICICI Bank at Rs 1,387.05 down 1.52% and TCS at Rs 948 down 1.33%.
Reliance packs were the most active counters on the bourses today. Reliance Inds, Rel Energy, RNRL and Reliance petroleum were the most active counters.
Mkts open in green; Rel Power IPO fully subscribed
The markets opened on strong note today on the back of favourable cues from the US markets. Good amount of buying was seen in the opening moves across the sectors except banking space. Reliance Power IPO opened for subscription today and got fully subscribed within one hour of opening.
At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 135 points at 20863 and Nifty was up 48 points at 6255. Major gainers were Infosys, RPL, RIL, NTPC, Cipla, NALCO, Unitech, Tata Power, Wipro, Tata Steel and Rel Energy. However, ICICI Bank was down in the banking space.
Asian markets were trading firm. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.31%or 80.90 points at 26,549.03. Japan's Nikkei gained 0.48% or 67.80 points at 14,178.59. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted surged 3.81% or 311.27 points at 8,484.68. However, South Korea's Seoul Composite was flat at 1,764.82.
US markets: The Dow surged 171.85 points, or 1.36%, to 12,778.15. The Standard & Poor's 500 index shot up 15.23 points, or 1.09%, to 1,416.25 and the Nasdaq composite index advanced 38.36 points, or 1.57%, to 2,478.30.
