Mkt ends weak on F&O expiry day; underperforms Asian peers

It was a disappointing close for markets as they ended flat on the F&O expiry day despite soome good cues from Asia. The markets opened strong and traded higher for major part of the day but slipped in the last hour of trade. Volatility crept in and pulled the Sensex down over 300 points from day's high and Nifty down over 100 points.

Sensex closes below 19,000 level and Nifty below 5,700 mark.

It was sharp rally in markets across Asia, with most of the markets ending up over 3%, after Wall Street put up a good show yesterday. Last two day's Dow has shown a triple digit rally triggering the uptrend. Broader markets ended lower and have underperformed the benchmark indices.

When we look at November series Sensex and Nifty are up nearly 1.2%.

Sensex was up 64.39 points or 0.34% at 19003.26, and the Nifty up 17.05 points or 0.30% at 5634.60.

About 1434 shares have advanced, 1552 shares declined, and 93 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 8,362.55 down 0.2%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 10,389.75 up 0.1%.

The BSE Bankex was up 2% at 10,601.41. IOB, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, PNB, Kotak Mahindra closed in red.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 0.7% at 19,410.48. Triveni Engg, Lakshmi Machine, Praj Industries, Areva T&D, Alstom Projects closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,419.51 up 0.3%.  Hero Honda, Maruti Suzuki, Exide Industrie, Mah and Mah, Apollo Tyres closed higher.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 16,872.32 down 0.6%.  Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, Hindalco, Sesa Goa closed lower.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.2% at 2,141.39. Nestle, Bata India, Tata Tea, GlaxoSmith Con, ITC ended lower.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 12,044.60 up 1%. Reliance Petro, Essar Oil, Reliance ended lower.

The BSE IT Index was at 4,085.76 up 0.1%. HCL Tech, Wipro, Satyam, TCS closed higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 23621.72 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 98225.56 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7614.45 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 129461.73 crore. 

Market off day's high

The markets are still trading in green but are off day's high with some volatility seen on the F&O expiry day. Selling is seen in select midcaps but overall rollovers have been very good. Market wide rollover were over 70%. Buying is seen in banking, metal and realty stocks.

At 2.28 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 245.75 points or 1.30% at 19184.62, and the Nifty up 75.70 points or 1.35% at 5693.25.

About 1602 shares have advanced, 1394 shares declined, and 83 shares are unchanged.

Real estate stocks were up with Maharshtra Assembly passing the Repealing of Urban Land Ceiling Act, which is good news for developers like Bombay Dyeing, Century Textiles and Godrej. Banking stocks are also shining ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are up. Banking index is up over 3%.

Realty index is up nearly 3%. Among the real estate gainers were Orbit Corporation is up 7%, HDIL up 7%, Godrej Ind is up 5%, Unitech is up 5%, Bombay Dyeing up over 5%, Century Textiles up 3%.

Among the frontline gainers, HDFC Bank is up 4% and ICICI Bank is up over 3%. In the metal space NALCO is up over 5%, Sterlite Ind is up over 4% and in the auto sector Maruti Suzuki is up over 3%.

Meal and IT index are up over 1.5%. Power, realty and auto stocks were strong in te early trade today.

GSPL, Mundra, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industries were some of the most active counters today. Most of the new F&O inclusions like WWIL, Ispat, KPIT Cummins were also buzzing and were up over 5% in the early trade today.  

Market trades firm: Realty stocks spurt

The markets are trading firm at the higher levels without any signs of weakness on the triple witching day. Joining the bandwagon of gainers are real estate stocks with Maharshtra Assembly passing the Repealing of Urban Land Ceiling Act, which is good news for developers like Bombay Dyeing, Century Textiles and Godrej. Banking stocks are also shining ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank are up. Banking index is up over 3%.

At 13.21 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 336.36 points or 1.78% at 19275.23, and the Nifty up 94.95 points or 1.69% at 5712.50.

About 1775 shares have advanced, 1195 shares declined, and 108 shares are unchanged.

Market trades with hefty gains: Bank stocks surge

The markets are trading win green with hefty gains on the F&O expiry day. It is sharp rally in markets across Asia, with most of the markets up 3%, after Wall Street put up a good show yesterday. Last two day's Dow has shown a triple digit rally triggering the uptrend. Broader markets are in green but have underperformed the benchmark indices.Both the BSE Midcap and smallcap index are up 0.7%.

At 12.15 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 291.51 points or 1.54% at 19230.38, and the Nifty up 71.95 points or 1.28% at 5689.50.

About 1730 shares have advanced, 1239 shares declined, and 109 shares are unchanged.

Mkts trading strong; metal, banking stocks in focus

The markets are trading stable with significant gains. All the key BSE indices are in green led by the metal and banking index. BSE midcaps and the smallcap stocks are holding up.

Market breadth was impressive with over 800 stocks on the advancing side and nearly 250 stocks on the decline side on NSE. Volume has also been good till now. 

At 10.33 am, the Sensex is up 302.58 points or 1.60% at 19241.45, and the Nifty up 74.50 points or 1.33% at 5692.05. About 2043 shares have advanced, 953 shares declined, and 82 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Nifty are HDFC Bank at Rs 1,691.65 up 5.31%, VSNL at Rs 559.90 up 4.91% and Sterlite Ind at Rs 923.70 up 3.68%. 

Top losers on the Nifty are HPCL at Rs 285.40 down 0.57%, HCL Tech at Rs 304 down 0.38% and Reliance Petro at Rs 191.70 down 0.21%.

Mkts open on firm note on strong global cues

The markets open on firm note today on the back of very strong cues from the global peers. All the Asian markets were trading strong following big reversal witnessed in the US markets yesterday. Power, banking and metal stocks were strong in te early trade today.

 At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 354 points at 19293 and Nifty was up 96 points at 5714. Major gainers in the opening trade were SAIL, NTPC, Infosys, RIL, Maruti, Wipro, SBI, REL, ACC, ITC, M&M and Satyam. However, Bajaj Auto, HUL and Ambuja Cement were weak in the early trade.

Asian markets were trading firm. Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 3.32% or 908.71 points at 28,279.95, Japan's Nikkei rose 2.38% or 361.02 points at 15,514.80, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted gained 2% or 165.88 points at 8,442.14, Singapore's Straits Times advanced 2.51% or 84.62 points at 3,454.34 and South Korea's Seoul Composite was up 2.59% or 47.45 points at 1,882.14.

US markets: The Dow gained 331.01 points, or 2.55%, to 13,289.45. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index surged 40.79 points, or 2.86%, to 1,469.02 and The Nasdaq composite index shot up 82.11 points, or 3.18%, to 2,662.91.
