Mkt ends deep in red: Midcaps, metal, FMCG crack

The markets ended deep in red after an extremely volatile session. The opening was strong but by the end of the day Sensex was down nearly 600 points from the day's high. Nifty was down nearly 200 points from the day's high. NSE Advance:Decline was 1:11. Barring bankex all the BSE sector indices ended with a deep cut. Metal, FMCG, IT, power and oil stocks were among the top losers.

CNX Midcap was down 3% and smallcap index was down over 3.8%

RPL was down 6%, followed by SAIL, GAIL, NTPC, Relaince Energy, Tata Steel and Reliance Communication.

Sensex closed down 287.70 points or 1.38% at 20582.08, and the Nifty down 115.05 points or 1.83% at 6156.95.

About 388 shares have advanced, 2557 shares declined, and 17 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,440.45 down 3.4%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 12,858.63 down 3.8%.

The BSE Bankex ended flat at 12,044.81. Andhra Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Allahabad Bank, Centurion Bank, IOB, Bank of Baroda, Federal moved downwards.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed down 2% at 19,666.06. Triveni Engg, Praj Industries, Astra Microwave, Reliance Infra, BEML, Jyoti Structure closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,440.35 down 2%.  Hind Motors, Punj Tractors, Apollo Tyres, TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland closed lower.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 18,770.14 down 3.4%. NALCO, Shree Precoated, Hindalco, Tata Steel, SAIL, Jindal Saw lower.

The BSE FMCG Index closed down 3.6% at 2,400.04. Nestle, United Spirits, Tata Tea, Marico, Bata India closed lower.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 13,528.94 down 2%. Reliance Natura, HPCL, Essar OIl, RPL,ONGC, Reliance ended in red
 
BSE power index closed at 4,700.63 down 2.4%. Torrent Power, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Power Grid Corp, Crompton Greave ended in red.

The BSE IT Index was down 2.6% at 4,146.88. I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 20899.23 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 78346.87 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 9082.81 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 108328.91 crore.

Mkts slips deep in red: Metal, FMCG, pharma down

The markets have given up their gains on account of selling pressure seen in index pivotals. Heavy selling pressure is seen in BSE smallcap and midcap index. Nifty and Sensex have slipped in the red. The opening was strong and Sensex was up 300 points at one point of the day.Nifty is down over 100 points from the day's high. BSE Smallcap index is down nearly 2% and midcap index is down 1.5%.

Most of the Asia ended lower barring Shanghai and Jakarta. Europe has opened higher.

At 2:51 hrs IST, the Sensex is down 120.74 points or 0.58% at 20749.04, and the Nifty down 63.55 points or 1.01% at 6208.45.

About 514 shares have advanced, 2424 shares declined, and 23 shares are unchanged.

ICICI Bank, SBI, Idea Cellular, Reliance, Unitech are among the top gainers on the indices.

Hindalco, ACC, GAIL, Reliance Petroleum, BPCL, Tata Steel were among the top fronline losers.

Tata Motors has launced its 1 lakh car called Nano; and the stock is bdown 0.8%.

Among the top midcap losers were KEI Ind, JP Hydro, Sakhti Sugar and Deccan Chronicle.

Markets still in green

The markets have given up some gains but are still trading in green. The market breadth has turned negative. Providing support at the lower levels are banking stocks. Select real estate, IT and auto stocks are trading strong. Midcap and smallcap indices are trading flat. FMCG and pharma stocks are trading little subdued. Most of the Asia ended lower barring Shanghai and Jakarta.

At 1.03 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 208.07 points or 1.00% at 21077.85, and the Nifty up 29.80 points or 0.48% at 6301.80.

About 1126 shares have advanced, 1784 shares declined, and 50 shares are unchanged.

Top gainers on the Sensex are ICICI Bank up over 5%, DLF up 1.7%, Tata Motors up over 1%, HDFC Bank up 1.6%. 

Tata Motors has launced its 1 lakh car Nano; and the stock is buzzing it is up over 1%.

Top losers on the Sensex are HDFC, GSK, HUL, BPCL and Reliance Petroleum and Bharti Airtel.

Banking stocks are on fire today. Leading gainers in the banking space are ICICI Bank, Oriental bank, Federal bank and Kotak Mahindra bank.

IT stocks are also leading from the fron today with I-Flex, Infosys, Wipro, TCS and Tech Mahindra leading from the front in todays trade, a day ahead of Infosys Q3 FY08 result.

Auto stocks are also attracting good amount of attention. Major gainers are Tata Motors, Hindustan Motors, Apollo Tyres and Amtek Auto.

Reliance Energy, Reliance Power,  RPL, Reliance, ICICI Bank were the most active stocks in the first half today.

Mkts trading strong; bank, auto, IT, metal stocks up

The markets have once again picked up momentum and are trading strong.  Banking, IT and auto stocks are trading strong with significant gains. Midcap and smallcap stocks are once again in action after consolidation for couple of days. FMCG and pharma stocks are trading little subdued.  

At 11.30 am, the Sensex is up 310.12 points or 1.49% at 21179.90, and the Nifty up 71.20 points or 1.14% at 6343.20. About 1567 shares have advanced, 1346 shares declined, and 46 shares are unchanged.

Market breadth was positive with over 850 stocks on the advancing side and nearly 400 stocks on the down side on NSE. Volume has been extremely good so far. Rupee was quoting at 39.28 against USD.

Top gainers on the Sensex are ICICI Bank at Rs 1,361.10 up 3.87%, DLF at Rs 1,204.10 up 3.02% and Tata Motors at Rs 791 up 2.67%. 

Top losers on the Sensex are HDFC at Rs 3,124.50 down 1.57%, HUL at Rs 230.60 down 1.39% and Bharti Airtel at Rs 963.95 down 0.88%.

Banking stocks are on fire today. Leading gainers in the banking space are ICICI Bank, Oriental bank, Federal bank and Kotak Mahindra bank.

Mkts open on firm note; ICICI Bk, Infosys strong

The markets opened on very strong note today on the back of heavy buying witnessed in the banking, IT and capital good stocks. Cues from the global markets were encouraging. Market breadth in the opening trade was positive.

At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 261 points at 21131 and Nifty was up 52 points at 6324. Major gainers in the opening trade were Infosys, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Rel Comm, Tata Motors, Maruti, Bajaj Auto, Unitech, Wipro, BHEL and Sterlite.   

Asian markets were trading mixed. Japan's Nikkei was down 0.80% or 116.94 points at 14,482.22. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped  0.40% or 110.38 points at 27,505.47. However, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted rose 0.87%or 70.15 points at 8,155.21. South Korea's Seoul Composite gained 0.51% or 9.33 points at 1,853.80.

US markets: The Dow gained 146.24 points, or 1.16% to 12,735.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 index shot up 18.94 points, or 1.36%, to 1,409.13, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 34.04 points, or 1.39% at 2,474.55.

  • FIIs net buy USD 261.1 million in equity
  • MFs net buy Rs 12.5 crore in equity
  • NSE F&O Open Int up by Rs 1,056 crore at Rs 1.29 lakh crore
