Mkt closes with smart gains: Nifty above 5,000 level

The markets closed in green with hefty gains on the first day of the week. Nifty maintained its position well above the 5,000 mark. The cues were strong from Asian peers. All BSE indices closed in green. Buying support was seen from metal, telecom, capital goods, technology, power, realty, FMCG and banking stocks. Midcap and small cap stocks outperformed the frontline indices. Market breadth was positive in the favour of advances. Top gainers were Tata Steel, JP Associates, Wipro, Suzlon Energy, Idea Cellular and SAIL while losers - BHEL and Sterlite Industries. Sensex closed up 258.13 points or 1.57% at 16739.33, and the Nifty up 78.60 points or 1.59% at 5037.00. About 2116 shares have advanced, 736 shares declined, and 224 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,983.26 up 2.2%. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,752.83 up 2.6%. The BSE Bankex ended at 8,580.72 up 3.4%. Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Kotak Mahindra, Oriental Bank, Allahabad Bank moved upwards. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed up 2% at 13,669.39. L&T, Astra Microwave, BEML, Crompton Greave, Thermax, Greaves Cotton, Areva T&D closed higher. The BSE Auto Index closed up 0.8% at 4,548.08. Escorts, TVS Motor, Amtek Auto, Cummins, Punj Tractors, MRF closed higher. The BSE Metal Index closed at 15,214.69 up 4%. Hind Zinc, Sterlite, NALCO, Shree Precoated, Mah Seamless, Jindal Steel, Jindal Saw, JindalStainless closed higher. The BSE FMCG Index closed flat at 2,372.69. Colgate, ITC, Bata India, Godrej Consumer, HUL, GlaxoSmith Con closed lower. BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 11,516.98 up 0.9%. GAIL, Reliance Natura, HPCL, RPL,ONGC, Reliance, ONGC ended in green. The BSE IT Index was down 1% at 4,006.50. Wipro, I-Flex Solution, Patni Computer, Financial Tech, Mphasis, Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys closed lower. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 13211.6 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 40635.23 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5863.03 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 59709.86 crore. At 9:56 am - The markets have rallied in the opening trade on strong global cues and did not react to 50-bps hike in CRR by RBI. Technology, metal, capital goods, power, realty, oil, FMCG and pharma stocks jumped up. Market breadth is positive. Midcap and small cap stocks have moved up. On the global front, Asian markets were trading strong. At 9:56 am, the Sensex was up 198 points at 16,679 and the Nifty up 60 points at 5,018. Satyam, HCL Tech, Rel Energy, Grasim, Nalco, Infosys, SAIL, Hindalco and Tata Steel were major gainers. Some reaction of 50 bps hike in CRR by RBI has seen in banking stocks. BSE Bankex opened flat and now trading marginally up. Market breadth is pretty strong, 763 shares have advanced while 161 shares declined on the NSE. Dabur Pharma went up over 13% in morning trade as Fresenius bought 73.3% stake in the company for Rs 878 crore at Rs 76.50/sh and will make 20% open offer. On the primary market front, Titagarh Wagons listed at Rs 604.90 as against its issue price of Rs 540 on the NSE. Asian markets were trading higher. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.64% or 221.24 points at 13,697.69. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 2.35% or 568.92 points at 24,766.70. Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.45% or 40.74 points at 9,115.08. Singapore's Straits Times was up 2.40% or 75.05 points at 3,199.92. South Korea's Seoul Composite added 1.69% or 29.95 points at 1,801.85. US markets rallied on hopes that the worst is over for financials and surprisingly solid earnings posted by multinational companies in US. The Dow Jones closed at 12,849.36, up 1.81% or 228.87 points, the Nasdaq up 2.61% or 61.14 points to settle at 2,402.97. Market cues:
