It was a quiet day for markets as they were seen consolidating at the higher level after yesterday's phenomenal rally. But the party continued for realty and sugar stocks. Other rate sensitives like auto and financials also saw buying interest. BSE Realty index surged nearly 7%. Metal, capital goods and oil & gas stocks did well in today's trade. However with rupee breaching the 40 mark IT stocks took in on their chin. Rupee climbed beyond 40 per dollar for the first time since May 14, 1998.
Sensex was up 25.20 points or 0.15% at 16347.95, and the Nifty up 15.20 points or 0.32% at 4747.55.
About 1323 shares have advanced, 1646 shares declined, and 62 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 7,132.71 up 16 points or 0.20%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,876.07 up 5 points or 0.05%.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was closed at 14,392.46 up 2%. Reliance Infra, Praj Industries, Bharat Bijlee, Siemens, Larsen, Greaves Cotton closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed closed at 5,136.85 up 0.8%. Mah and Mah, Bharat Forge, TVS Motor, Escorts, Hind Motors ended in the green.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 12,723.31 up 1.4%. Jindal Steel, Sesa Goa, Sterlite Ind, Shree Precoated, Jindal Saw advanced.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.2% at 2,165.71. ITC, Britannia, Bata India, Colgate ended in red.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 9,019.56 up 1.07%. Reliance Natura, HPCL, Petronet LNG, BPCL, Reliance Petro closed in green.
The BSE IT Index closed at 4,390.75 down 2%.Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Patni, Satyam, Patni Computer closed lower.
The BSE Bankex closed flat at 8,688.68. Centurion Bank, Axis Bank, Karnataka Bank, Kotak Mahindra closed higher.
Ralty index was up 7%. Top gainers on the index were Unitech, Indiabulls Real, DLF, Sobha Developer, Mahindra Gesco were among the top gainers.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 14750.14 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 58327.40 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7195.06 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 80272.60 crore.
Market trades flat: IT, pharma, banks underperform
The markets are trading flat and are seen consolidating after yesterday's rally. Selective buying is seen in auto, capital goods, FMCG, metal and oil & gas stocks. Realty is the the big story of the day and the index is up 7%. Undererformance is seen by IT stocks as rupee climbed beyond 40 per dollar for the first time since May 14, 1998.
At 13.13 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 9.23 points or 0.06% at 16331.98, and the Nifty up 6.75 points or 0.14% at 4739.10.
About 1406 shares have advanced, 1553 shares declined, and 72 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Sensex are Mah and Mah at Rs 764 up 3.11%, Tata Motors at Rs 740.80 up 2.58% and Hindalco at Rs 163.20 up 2.35%.
Top losers on the Sensex are Infosys at Rs 1,800.25 down 2.86%, TCS at Rs 1,001.45 down 2.05% and Wipro at Rs 440.75 down 1.65%.
Relaty index was up 7.36% at 9087.85. Major gainers were Unitech at 330.20 up 12.79%, Indiabulls Real at 579.45 up 10.48% and Mahindra Gesco at 654.05 up 5.59 % and DLF was up 4.6% at 746.10.
Most active shares on NSE are DLF at Rs 746 with 2,647,634 shares, Unitech at Rs 330.45 with 5,836,965 shares, Indiabulls Real at Rs 580 with 2,578,964 shares.
Markets gain; Realty stocks flying high
The markets have recovered from its opening choppiness and have gained some strength on the back strong performance of realty stocks followed by metals, durables and auto packs. Market breadth has also improved. IT, bank and pharma counter are still trading weak.
At 12.17 pm, the Sensex is up 59.71 points or 0.37% at 16382.46, and the Nifty up 19.35 points or 0.41% at 4751.70. About 1587 shares have advanced, 1357 shares declined, and 87 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Sensex are Mah and Mah at Rs 764 up 3.11%, Tata Motors at Rs 740.80 up 2.58% and Hindalco at Rs 163.20 up 2.35%.
Top losers on the Sensex are Infosys at Rs 1,800.25 down 2.86%, TCS at Rs 1,001.45 down 2.05% and Wipro at Rs 440.75 down 1.65%.

Rupee has appreciated further and was quoting at 39.92 against US dollar. This has hit the IT stocks badly and the majority of IT companies were trading with deep cut. Top losers were Infosys at 1799.40 down 2.91%, TCS at 1000.80 down 2.12% and Wipro at 440 down 1.82%.
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 218.50 up 0.69% from its previous close of Rs 217.00.
Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 2,174.00 up 0.05% from its previous close of Rs 2,172.90.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,799.90 down 2.88% from its previous close of Rs 1,853.30.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 191.50 up 2.49% from its previous close of Rs 186.85.
Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 247.00 up 2.9% from its previous close of Rs 240.05.
Mkts turn choppy; IT, banking stocks weak
The markets have turned choppy after flat opening today. FMCG and realty stocks are in focus today, however, IT and banking stocks are trading weak.
At 11 am, the Sensex is up 27.63 points or 0.17% at 16350.38, and the Nifty up 14.40 points or 0.30% at 4746.75. About 1504 shares have advanced, 1438 shares declined, and 89 shares are unchanged.
Nifty Sep Future has once agin gone back in discount and was trading at discount of 2.20 at 4741.20. Market breadth was thin on NSE with nearly 547 stocks on the advancing side and 538 stocks on the decline side.
Top gainers on the Sensex are ITC at Rs 192.25 up 2.89%, ONGC at Rs 923.05 up 2.39% and NTPC at Rs 193.30 up 2.01%.
Top losers on the Sensex are Infosys at Rs 1,813 down 2.17%, TCS at Rs 1,002.50 down 1.95% and Wipro at Rs 442 down 1.37%.
Most active shares on BSE are Magnum Ventures at Rs 59.70 with 5,678,113 shares, DLF at Rs 738 with 388,969 shares and Shree Renuka at Rs 711.60 with 392,653 shares.
Mkts open on quiet note; auto, metals up
After scaling a new high yesterday on account of biggest single day gain on the bourses, the markets took a pause and opened on quiet note in line with its Asian peers.
Good amount of buying was witnessed in the opening move led by banking, metal and auto sectors. However, Technology stocks opened in red on the back of further appreciation of Rupee which has climbed at 39.94 against US dollar. Its 9 year high for the rupee against dollar.
At 9:56 am, Sensex was up 18 points at 16341 and Nifty was up 14 points 4746. Major gainers in the opening trade were Reliance, ICICI Bank, SAIL, SBI, Hindalco, M&M, GAIL, ONGC, Bharti, Rel Energy, Rel Comm, Tata Steel and BPCL. Reliance Petroleum was in red.
Magnum Ventures lists at Rs 37 versus its issue price of Rs 30.
Asian markets trading higher. Japan's Nikkei was up 0.08% or 13.68 points at 16,395.22, Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 0.40% or 101.56 points at 25,656.20, Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted gained 1.42% or 126.35 points at 9,052.73, However, South Korea's Seoul Composite was flat at 1,903.29 and Singapore's Straits Times was down 0.28% or 9.99 points at 3,584.37.
US markets: The Dow Jones industrials rose 76.17 points, or 0.55%, to 13,815.56. While the Dow finished well off its highs of the session, the gains nevertheless came a day after a jump of nearly 336 points -- its biggest one-day point gain in nearly five years. Broader stock indicators also rose. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.25 points, or 0.61%, to 1,529.03. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14.82 points, or 0.56%, to 2,666.48
