Frontliners start '08 on a quiet note; Midcaps party

The frontliners started the year 2008 on a quiet note. Sensex and Nifty ended the day flat amid a choppy session. Selling pressure was seen in select telecom and IT stocks. Selective buying was seen in power, realty, bank and FMCG. Broader markets have outperformed the frontliners giving markets positive breadth.

Most of the Asian and European markets were closed on account of New Year. 

Sensex closed up 13.72 points or 0.07% at 20300.71, and the Nifty up 5.75 points or 0.09% at 6144.35.

About 2418 shares have advanced, 651 shares declined, and 36 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,935.03 up 1.5%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 13,703.07 up 2.7%.

The BSE Bankex was up 1% at 11,510.31. IOB, Allahabad Bank, Centurion Bank, Andhra Bank, Karnataka Bank closed in green.

The BSE Capital Goods Index closed flat at 19,747.80. Greaves Cotton, Kirloskar Oil, Astra Microwave, Reliance Infra closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,716.49 up 1%.  Hind Motors, Apollo Tyres, Exide Industrie, Bharat Forge, Tata Motors closed higher.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 20,061.49 up 0.2%. Mah Seamless, JindalStainless, Jindal Saw, SAIL, Jindal Steel closed higher

The BSE FMCG Index closed up 2.4% at 2,375.07.  ITC, Marico, Tata Tea, Dabur India, HUL, Godrej Consumer ended higher

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 13,280.88 down 0.2%.   Essar Oil, Petronet LNG, Reliance Petro, ONGC ended higher.

The BSE IT Index was at 4,471.48 down 1.3%. Mphasis, TCS, HCL Tech, Wipro, Satyam  closed lower.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 16560.68 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 49163.28 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 8911.47 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 74635.43 crore. 

Mkt off day highs: Power, oil, realty up; IT down

The markets are trading flat off day's high. Selling pressure is seen in select telecom and IT stocks. Selective buying was seen in power, metal and pharma. Most of Asian markets are closed on account of New Year. Broader markets have outperformed the frontliners giving markets positive breadth.

BSE Midcap is up 1.3% and the smallcap index is up over 3%. BSE FMCG index is up over 2.3%  followed by power index up 2% and auto, metal, realty up over 0.5% each. 

At 2.22 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 8.48 points or 0.04% at 20295.47, and the Nifty up 3.55 points or 0.06% at 6142.15.

About 2459 shares have advanced, 614 shares declined, and 32 shares are unchanged.

In the FMCG sector ITC is up over 4% followed by HUL up 2.5%. Reliance Enery was up over 3%. The other gainers are Nalco and Tata Steel.

BPCL, TCS, Bharti, Cairn India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank were among the top losers.

IFCI, eClerx, GTL Infra, Reliance Energy were among the most active shares on the bourses.

Yesterday Wall Street ended the year on a negative note. The Dow plunged 101.05 points, or 0.76%, to 13,264.82. The S&P 500 index was down 10.13 points, or 0.69%, to 1,468.36. The Nasdaq slipped 22.18 points, or 0.83%, to 2,652.28. 

Mkt trades marginally in green: Midcaps, smallcaps up

It has been a quiet start for the markets to the new year. Markets are trading stable with marginal gains. Most of Asian markets are closed on account of New Year. Broader markets have outperformed the frontliners giving markets positive breadth. Selective buying was seen in power, metal and pharma. Trading weak are select IT, capital goods, telecom stocks.

BSE Midcap is up 2% and the smallcap index is up over 3%. BSE FMCG index is up over 3%  followed by auto, metal, power, realty up around 1% each.

At 12.46 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 72.44 points or 0.36% at 20359.43, and the Nifty up 16.30 points or 0.27% at 6154.90.

About 2628 shares have advanced, 445 shares declined, and 32 shares are unchanged.

In the FMCG sector ITC is up over 4% followed by HUL up 2.5%. Reliance Enery was up over 3%. The other gainers are Nalco and Tata Steel.

Markets lacklustre: ITC, Rel Energy, Tata Steel up

The markets are trading lacklustre on the first day of 2008. Selective buying was seen in power, metal and pharma. Most of Asian markets are closed on account of New Year. Auto, realty and FMCG stocks are also trading in green. Trading weak are select IT, capital goods, telecom and oil stocks.

At 11.09 hrs IST, the Sensex is up 23.08 points or 0.11% at 20310.07, and the Nifty down 1.60 points or 0.03% at 6137.00.

About 2578 shares have advanced, 486 shares declined, and 40 shares are unchanged.

Among the frontliners FMCG major ITC is up nearly 3% followed by Nalco up 2.6%, Reliance Energy up 2% and Tata Steel up over 1.5%.

BPCL, TCS, Bharti, Cairn India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank were among the top losers.

Market opens flat: Metal, power, pharma up

Markets open flat with selective buying seen in power, metal and pharma stocks are doing well. Market breadth is good as buying is seen in the midcap space. However, frontliners are largely flat.

At 10:05 Sensex was trading at 20220 down 60 points and the Nifty was down 26 points at 6112.

ITC, NTPC, Tata Power, Rel Energy, Zee, VSNL, Tata Steel, Hindalco were among the gainers.

Gati, Videocon Ind, Aegis were among the midcap gainers.

BPCL, TCS, Bharti, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank were among the top losers.
