Wall Street ends with moderate gain; Dow up 41 pts

Wall Street managed to close in positive territory after a rollercoaster session. A better-than-expected reading on the services sector, an encouraging outlook from Cisco's CEO and new highs for several commodities spurred buying, while disappointment in an announcement from Ambac triggered selling. Stocks slipped nearly 1.8% from the session's peak.

Energy stocks advanced as oil jumped above 104 dollars a barrel following reports of a decline in US crude supply.

Economic data was mixed. February ISM services index posted better than expected results while last month's ADP employment reading was worse than expected.

The Dow advanced  41.19 points, or 0.34% to 12,254.99. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 6.95 points, or 0.52%, to 1,333.70, while the Nasdaq composite added 12.53 points, or 0.55%, to 2,272.81.
