Wall Street ended flat as fears about first quarter earnings temper sentiment. Stocks initially got a boost after Wall Street journal reported that US private-equity firm TPG and other investors are near a deal to infuse $ 5 billion in Washington Mutual. The stock finished nearly 30% higher.
Financials had their day in the sun, after Merrill Lynch upgraded its rating on Swiss Bank and UBS. Citigroup has agreed to sell its diners club international unit to discover financial services. Both UBS and Citigroup closed higher.
Alcoa officially kicked off the earnings season. Its profit fell short of analyst estimates because of higher cost of raw materials and a weaker dollar, but the company's sales beat forecasts.
Yahoo has responded to Microsoft's letter. It fired back a letter of its own saying it’s not opposed to Microsoft's offer as long as it’s the right price.
The Dow advanced 3.01 points, or 0.02%, to 12,612.43. The S&P 500 index was up 2.14 points, or 0.16%, at 1,372.54. The Nasdaq composite index slipped 6.15 points, or 0.26%, to 2,364.83.
