Wall St ends with moderate gain; Dow up 46 pts

The US markets ended higher after a volatile session. The move was lead by better-than-forecast durable goods orders and positive financial results from select retailers. Shares of technology companies such as IBM and Hewlett-Packard rose after a government report on orders for durable goods long-lasting manufactured items showed a surprising jump in business investment last month.

American Insurance Group, the world's largest insurer, fell sharply after Citigroup said the insurer may need even more capital after raising $ 20 billion just last week.

At closing bell, the Dow Jones was up 46 points to shut at 12,594. Nasdaq was up 5 points and shut shop at 2,487. The S&P 500 index shut shop 5 points higher as well at 1,3901.
