US mkts end with modest gain; Dow up 43 pts

US markets advanced as a range of technology companies posted strong results. In US, Apple blew past earnings and sales expectations, sending the share price higher in after hours of trade. Amazon shares also had beaten earning target and also that the company had raised its 2008 sales outlook. The stock was up 2%. Boeing drove the Dow Industrials higher after news that strong deliveries of commercial planes boosted its profits. The Aerospace giant said that its profits rose by 38%. Bond Insurer Ambac's shares skidded 43% after it reported a first-quarter net loss of %1.66 billion. Moving on to some Merger & Acquisition news, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that the software giant was prepared to walk away from its $ 44 billion deal with yahoo if two of them couldn't agree on a price. The Dow gained 42.99 points, or 0.34%, to 12,763.22. The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 3.99 points, or 0.29%, to 1,379.93. The Nasdaq composite index rose 28.27 points, or 1.19%, to 2,405.21.
