Admissions can now take place at IIIM-Calcutta because the Supreme Court has set aside a Calcutta High Court order, staying the admission process at the institute. The High Court order followed a petition filed by a student appearing for an admission interview at the institute, arguing that the OBC quota was not valid for post-graduate institutes. This was reasoned by saying that gradutes would fall under the creamy-layer category.

As far as the admission process for IIM Calcutta is concerned, the Supreme Court has categorically set aside the Calcutta High Court order, which stayed reservations for Other Backward Classes, or OBCs, in that particular institution.

The Supreme Court ruling means admissions at IIM-C will continue, incorporating the 27% OBC quota rule. The Supreme Court has not stopped there. It has also stayed all proceedings relating to reservations that are pending in the high courts of Delhi, Calcutta and Bombay.

However, the Supreme Court says admissions in post-graduate courses in central educational institutions will be provisional. Final admissions will be subject to the outcome of the final order in the matter pending before it.
