New Delhi, July 8

Siemens Mobility division (Siemens AG) together with Siemens Ltd has received a Rs 300-crore order from Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) for Terminal 3 baggage handling system at Delhi international airport. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by March 2010.

A company statement said Siemens is supplying the baggage handling system for the new terminal 3 at Delhi airport and added that in future, bags can be handled in at 168 check-in desks at the departures level of the terminal. For oversize luggage, there will be five desks available. A total of 28 X-ray stations will be integrated in the system so that all baggage can be subjected to full security inspection.

Sorting system

The sorting system has been designed for a capacity of over 11,300 bags an hour, for which tilt-tray sorters as well as vertical sorters and high-speed diverters will be used. In addition, the system includes make-up carousels.

At the arrivals level of the new terminal, 12 baggage claim systems will ensure problem-free distribution of baggage to travellers, the statement added.

“The baggage handling system being provided at the international airport is the biggest in India and at par with the best in the world,” said Dr Armin Bruck, Managing Director, Siemens Ltd.
