Highly placed sources in SBI told CNBC-TV18 that the rights issue which closes today will sail through. A top official said that over 90% shares on offer were taken up by noon today.

Several large institutional investors and mutual funds have agreed to pick up larger stakes than they are entitled to, that is if retail investors don't subscribe to their entire share.

Of the Rs 17,000 crore issue, Rs 10,000 crore comes from the government in the form of bonds. The balance was for the minority shareholders.
