Piramal Healthcare buys global rights on Haemaccel

Piramal Healthcare Ltd has acquired the ‘Haemaccel’ brand of blood plasma products from Germany’s PlasmaSelect AG, for a cash consideration of €7.7 million (about Rs 53 crore).

Blood-plasma expansion products are life-saving infusion pharmaceuticals that help maintain blood plasma volume until blood transfusion can be given to a patient, in the event of blood loss.

At present, Piramal Healthcare markets the product as ‘Haemaccel’ in India and ‘Haemageline’ in 17 other countries. In 1998, Piramal Healthcare had bought the Haemaccel-related business in India along with the manufacturing facility in Mumbai from sanofi-aventis, the originator of Haemaccel.

In 2004, sanofi-aventis sold its Haemaccel-related rights in 76 countries and its manufacturing facility at Marburg, Germany, to PlasmaSelect AG.
