It was another shocking case of a bank borrower committing suicide allegedly because he could neither pay up nor bear the threats of the bank's recovery agent. 38-year-old Prakash Sarvankar, a father of three daughters, had borrowed all of 50,000 rupees fromICICI on Jan 15.

On Tuesday September 18, Sarvankar committed suicide citing repeated threats by the bank's recovery agents asking him to pay up. Sarvankar was unemployed and should never have been eligible for a loan says his wife. For its part, ICICI claims it follows a transparent process for collection of overdues. The process commences with telephonic reminders to customers, followed by written reminder and only finally a visit to the customer.
