The new EU emission norms could hit JLR with huge emissions fines, reports CNBC-TV18 quoting the Birmingham Post. It also said that JLR may face "devastating" fines of up to 17,000 pound per car following its sale to Tata Motors. It reported that EC is drawing up new CO2 emission norms.

Under the current proposal, carmakers to be fined up to 68 pounds for every g/KM over the limit from 2015. JLR's most fuel-efficient car, the X-Type, currently emits 149 g/km. It could face a fine of 1,292 pound per vehicle under new norms. The Range Rover V8 emits 376 g/km and it could attract an EU fine of 16,728 pound per vehicle.

A JLR spokesperson said, “Jaguar and Land Rover are investing 700 million pounds in developing and implementing a range of environmental technologies. We don't know yet what the ultimate legislative targets will be, but JLR does expect to deliver significant CO2 reductions. Any legislation however should take into account those manufacturers with a limited range of products and the costs should be kept in proportion."
