The Indian stock market has been in the global limelight, as foreign investors focus on Indian equities as a great investment option. Over 2007, the Sensex gave us a whopping 47% returns, but the start of 2008 was not as encouraging.

Is this a sign that the India story is over, or is there other factors at play? The current market scenario calls one to be cautious, patient and to take guidance from the experts.

CNBC-TV18's found out how the future augurs from five experts that included Dinesh Thakkar, Chairman and MD, Angel Broking, Subash Lakhotia, Tax Expert, Phani Sekhar, Fund Manager, Angel Broking, Sandeep Wagle, Chief Investment Officer, Angel Broking and Rajen Shah, Chief Investment Officer, Angel Broking.

Thakkar feels that the Budget has lost its importance as a big-bang event, which set the market trend. However, he said that the markets need to be aligned to fundamentals. Lakhotia feels that the Budget will be exceptionally beneficial to individual taxpayers. Phani Sekhar feels that just as the farmers have benefited from the Budget, the middle class will benefit from the modified tax slabs; people can save more. Wagle believes that the markets’ performance can be termed as a ‘crash’ and the investors are unclear. The global news coming in is also hitting the markets, he said. Shah feels that the agricultural sector should do exceptionally well in the future; in the next 3-5-7 years.
