NEW YORK/NEW DELHI: Putting an end to the year-long battle for control over bankrupt copper miner Asarco, a district court in Texas has favoured

Grupo Mexico`s $2.4 billion bid over that of Sterlite Industries, media report says. "A US district judge issued a ruling in favour of Mexican mining conglomerate Grupo Mexico SAB, ending the long battle over US copper giant Asarco LLC," the Wall Street Journal said.
When contacted a Sterlite industries spokesperson said in New Delhi that "We are yet to receive a copy of the judgement and will come back to you accordingly".
The Wall Street Journal said, "Judge Hanen retained final say over whether to approve Grupo Mexico`s offer over Vedanta`s $2.5 billion bid, which was backed by Asarco and its union, United Steelworkers." The ruling by Judge Andrew Hanen in Brownsville, Texas, ratified a decision by the US Bankruptcy court in August, wherein the Grupo Mexico`s $2.4 billion offer to repay Asarco`s creditors and take it out of bankruptcy was approved.
Quoting Judge Hanen`s 141-page ruling, the WSJ said, "The case is now in the fifth year of bankruptcy proceedings. The end, barring appeals, is now in sight." Grupo Mexico has been battling with Sterlite Industries for control of Asarco since last year.
Hanen has held hearings on the matter last month, and indicated then that Grupo Mexico and its work force should begin discussion on a new collective bargaining agreement to avoid labour strife after Asarco exits bankruptcy, the WSJ added.
Sterlite Industries entered into a pact with Asarco to acquire the company at a consideration of $1.7 billion, a move which sparked off a price war between the Vedanta Group company and Grupo Mexico. ...

HYDERABAD: In what could be a major setback for the Mahindras as well as the restatement of Satyam accounts, Mahindra Satyam has received legal

notices from 37 companies staking claim to a refund of Rs 1230.4 crore that was allegedly given as a temporary advance to the then Satyam Computer Services.
"The notices have claimed the return of money to `repay creditors`, some of whom include Maytas Properties Ltd and Maytas Infra Ltd", Mahindra Satyam said in a filing to the bourses on Tuesday.
Mahindra Satyam also told the bourses that it had replied to the legal notices on November 14, 2009, stating that the claims were "legally untenable". The company also said that Satyam founder Ramalinga Raju`s confession letter dated January 7, 2009, too had made a reference to "a net amount of Rs 1,230 crore arranged to the company by the 37 companies".
Incidentally, after the Satyam scam broke out, Raju`s younger brother Suryanarayana Raju too is learnt to have written a letter to Satyam, seeking a refund of over Rs 1,200 crore which he claimed were given by Raju family-owned private companies.
Recently, even Maytas Infra`s new owner-- IL&FS-- has written to Mahindra Satyam, giving proof of a transfer of Rs 20 crore through two front companies — Angeerasa Greenfields and Saptaswara AgroFarm — on July 31, 2008, into Satyam accounts through the Hyderabad branch of Axis Bank.
The IL&FS letter is also understood to have asked Mahindra Satyam to show the money as debt in their accounts, which are being restated by KPMG. The Mahindras, incidentally, have got an extension up to June 30, 2010, for submitting the restated Satyam accounts to various regulatory authorities.
It was government-appointed director on the board of Maytas Infra and Maytas Properties, Ved Jain, who had disclosed in July that the two companies had given Rs 392 crore and Rs 220 crore respectively to Satyam via privately- owned companies. ...

Egypt v Algeria: why World Cup play-off is football`s most explosive match
Algeria v Egypt: Now that`s what you call a grudge match! Why the African World Cup play-off match will be the must-watch event this week (from as far away as you can get...)
Egypt may have won the battle but they haven’t won the war. Algeria midfielder Khaled Lemmouchia was not referring to military conflict when he spoke on Monday,
but to a monumental World Cup play-off against Egypt in neutral Sudan on Wednesday.
Rarely has such rhetoric been more appropriate for a football match.
It is exactly 20 years since one of the most infamous chapters in the history of African football.
Having lost out to Egypt for a place at the 1990 World Cup in Cairo on November 17, 1989, Algerian players and officials mobbed the referee and then began hurling plant pots into the crowd.
Later, at a post-match reception, the Egyptian team doctor had his eye gouged out by an Algerian player wielding a broken bottle. Star striker Lakhdar Balloumi was convicted and sentenced to prison in his absence, although some say the culprit was actually a reserve goalkeeper.
In April, Interpol agreed to drop Balloumi’s arrest warrant as attempts were made at the highest level to restore good relations ahead of two World Cup qualifiers between the teams in Group C, but events have only conspired to stoke up the rivalry even further.
So, what happened?
The game went in to stoppage time with Egypt 1-0 up before, in the 95th minute, Emad Moteab scored a header to make it 2-0.
Emad Moteab’s goal deep into injury-time in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Algeria in Cairo left Egypt with an identical record to their old rivals, forcing a knock-out tie between the two.
‘People are saying it’s the biggest match in Egypt’s history but others
think the rivalry has gone way out of proportion. It shouldn’t be a case of do or die, or life and death. But, with football, we tend to forget about good relations and it descends into a war zone.’
And, in Sudan on Wednesday, only one of these bitter rivals will be left standing.

HONG KONG/BARCELONA, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Shares in Vodafone (VOD.L) are expected to open higher on Monday after it beat rival suitors with an $11.1 billion bid for a controlling stake in Hutchison Essar, India`s fourth-biggest mobile phone firm.
The deal, confirmed late on Sunday, gives British-based Vodafone a powerful stake in the world`s second-biggest and fastest-growing mobile phone market.
It is also a high-stakes move by Vodafone Chief Executive Arun Sarin, who is under pressure from slowing growth in the firm`s core European markets, but has also been warned by investors not to overpay for acquisitions.
Traders said Vodafone shares were likely to rise by as much as 2.5 percent in early trade, signalling investors think Sarin has struck a good deal.
Vodafone, the world`s biggest mobile phone firm by subscribers outside China, is a serial acquirer and its 180-billion-euro ($234 billion) purchase of Germany`s Mannesmann in 2000 was the biggest company takeover in history.
But it has also been accused of overpaying. It took an impairment charge of over 23 billion pounds in its last financial year, largely against past acquisitions, leading it to report the biggest ever annual loss by a European company.
Vodafone said late on Sunday its purchase of Hutchison Telecommunications` (2332.HK) 67 percent stake in Hutchison Essar valued the Indian firm at $18.8 billion, including debt.
The deal is Vodafone`s third-biggest ever and beat three rival suitors, India`s Reliance Communications (RLCM.BO) and the Hinduja and Essar groups, the latter of which owns 33 percent of Hutchison Essar.
Shares in Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing`s Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. (2332.HK), which have risen 28 percent since the start of November in anticipation of a sale, were suspended on Monday. The company was expected to make a statement later in the day.
The transaction is the fourth-largest M&A deal involving an Asian company outside of Japan, based on Dealogic figures, and marks another lucrative exit for Li, whose penchant for dealmaking is legendary.
They hit the jackpot again, said Francis Lun, general manager at Fulbright Securities in Hong Kong. "Considering that they only put HK$20 billion (US$2.6 billion) into India, it has to be a good deal for them."
Shares in Hutchison Telecom`s parent, ports-to-property conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (0013.HK), rose 0.68 percent while its bond spreads tightened on hopes that deal proceeds will be used to lower debt and improve its credit profile.
