Nalco in demand as it begins coal imports
National Aluminium Company spurted 5.26% to Rs 388.15 on BSE on reports the company begun importing coal to overcome shortages, which forced the company to cut alumina output in July 2008.
On BSE, 91,925 shares were traded in the counter. The scrip had an average daily volume of 1.69 lakh shares in the past one quarter.
The stock hit a high of Rs 393.75 and a low of Rs 374 so far during the day. The stock had hit a 52-week high of Rs 565.90 on 29 May 2008 and a 52-week low of Rs 252 on 30 August 2007.
The mid-cap company had underperformed the market over the past one month till 28 August 2008, declining 13.99% compared to the Sensex’s decline of 2.10%. It had also underperformed the market in the past one quarter, declining 33.22% compared to Sensex’s decline of 14.99%.
The company has an equity capital of Rs 644.31 crore. Face value per share is Rs 10.
The current price of Rs 388.15 discounts its Q1 June 2008 annualised EPS of Rs 32.16, by a PE multiple of 12.07.
As per reports, the company had planned total import of 3.30 lakh tonnes out of which 30000 tonnes of coal had already arrived.
Earlier this month, National Aluminium Company (Nalco) resumed normal production at its Damanjodi alumina refinery in the eastern state of Orissa after output was curtailed in July 2008 due to a coal shortage.
Domestic coal supplies are expected to improve only after the monsoon rains end in September 2008.
Nalco’s net profit rose 17.6% to Rs 525.33 crore on 25.9% increase in net sales to Rs 1467.49 crore in Q1 June 2008 over Q1 June 2007.
Nalco manufactures and distributes aluminum products. Government of India holds 87.15% stake in the company.
