Did Bank of punjab, Lord krishna bank, Global trust bank etc said anything in advance to the depositors that they are being compelled to merge with some other bank? The collapse of the financial banks and NBFCs are as old as mankind. At the present rate of subsidies and Unaccountable money advanced to our MLAS and MPS for the "improvement of their constituency`, are taken into account, slowly all the PSU banks will become near bankrupt. I happened to hear this message as a `daylaight robbery` in an interview a wekly magazine had with a political leader. Till date the statement is not chalenged by the Govt. What does it mean.? astep towards declaring `morotorium`.
that is why I suggested to our friends to give letters to their bankers for enhancing the limit of insurance cover for deposits. Some are telling, `they are PSU banks and hence need not`. Then Why should they have a insuce. cover for one lac?
We are cheating ourself.

So DOW closed well above BS expectation of 9800+ value!
Dow closed in four digit figures.
9,955.50
-369.88 (-3.58%)
Oct 6 - Close
That four figures should be good enough to create all kind of scary and fearful headlines. That four figures will now put PRESSURE on different BIG PLAYers to take some steps!
Scope is still for some Downside to that 9800 on closing basis in 1-2 days!
Let us hope positive news along with rate cuts, better corporate results along with new accounting norms starts coming up!
Rally on DOW should be expected soon!
Gud luk & happy investing! :)

Bank of America profits plunge 68%
Banking giant reports - more than a week in advance - worse-than-expected earnings. Dividend halved and $10B stock sale announced
NEW YORK -- Bank of America on Monday reported a steep decline in earnings and slashed its dividend in half and revealed plans to raise $10 billion through a stock sale.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank said its third-quarter net income fell to $1.18 billion, or 15 cents a share, down 68% from $3.7 billion, or 82 cents a share, a year ago.
That was far worse than what Wall Street`s consensus forecasts of a net profit of $3.22 billion, or 62 cents a share.
Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) shares, which fell 6.5% during regular trading Monday, tumbled an additional 8% after the closing bell.
Fresh off its recent acquisition of Merrill Lynch, Bank of America also said it planned to raise $10 billion in capital through a common stock sale and that it will cut its dividend to 32 cents from 64 cents in recent quarters.
Kenneth Lewis, Bank of America`s chairman and chief executive officer, called the move "prudent" given the current market climate, which has resulted in the disappearance of several major financial institutions in recent weeks.
"These are the most difficult times for financial institutions that I have experienced in my 39 years in banking," Lewis said in a statement.
In addition to Bank of America`s purchase of Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers has filed for bankruptcy, JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) acquired failed savings and loan Washington Mutual and Wachovia (WB, Fortune 500) is in the process of being bought by either Citigroup (C, Fortune 500) or Wells Fargo (WFC, Fortune 500). Those two banks are battling in court over the rights to buy Wachovia.
Lewis blamed the dismal quarterly results on higher credit costs in such areas as its mortgage and credit businesses as more consumers found it difficult to repay their loans.
Bank of America said it set aside $6.45 billion for credit-related losses, more than triple during the same period just a year ago.
The results, which was originally slated to be released on Oct. 20, come just as the company announced a massive $8.4 billion foreclosure prevention effort.
As part of a legal settlement with 11 state attorneys general who had sued the troubled mortgage lender Countrywide Financial, Bank of America said it would cut monthly housing payments, a move that is expected to keep as many as 400,000 borrowers across the country.
In January, Bank of America announced plans to acquire Countrywide and completed its purchase in June.

Funds dry up in Golden State
By Matthew Garrahan and Nicole Bullock in Los Angeles
California’s economy, which would be the eighth biggest in the world if the state was a separate country, is teetering on the brink of a financial crisis intensified by the credit crunch.
California is weeks away from running out of money. In a letter to Hank Paulson, the US Treasury secretary, Arnold Schwarzenegger, California’s governor, last week admitted an immediate $7bn (€5bn, £4bn) was needed to pay for essential public services, such as police and fire-fighters
California would normally generate interim funding by issuing “revenue anticipation notes” in the short term credit markets to tide it over until tax revenues arrive later in its financial year. But the door to the credit markets is firmly closed.
Other states are also suffering from poor economic conditions and declining tax revenues.
Florida, Nevada, Massachusetts and Ohio have dipped into their reserves to maintain spending, according to Robert Kurtter, managing director of Moody’s US public finance group. But he said California’s situation was unique as it often relied on the capital markets to maintain spending commitments.
“When you have that dependency year-in-year-out you are going to get caught out when the markets are disrupted,” he said. “And that’s exactly what happened.”
Unlike most other states, California does not have a reserve fund and because it depends heavily on capital gains tax and stock option realisations, its revenues can be volatile. The looming cash flow crunch has caused considerable alarm.
“We are two weeks or so away from not being able to pay teachers and fire-fighters,” said Ross DeVol, director of regional economics at the Milken Institute, a Los Angeles-based think-tank.
Passage of the $700bn bail-out bill last week may not have solved the state’s immediate problems. “If we could get through the next two or three weeks without another financial institution being taken over that might restore confidence in counter-parties. But I don’t think the bill will free up the credit markets in the near term.”
Others in the municipal bond arena are more hopeful the bail-out will ease credit conditions for state borrowers. “I am hopeful that this bill will serve as the catalyst to provide stability and a resumption of normal activity,” said Ben Watkins, director of bond finance for the state of Florida.
Florida is facing a projected budget deficit of about $1.4bn and recently postponed a $200m bond issue earmarked for school construction.
Bill Lockyer, California’s treasurer, said immediate cash needs could be met with as little as $3bn.
But to end its reliance on the markets, California must first become better at balancing its budget, said Mr Kurtter. “Typically, when entities get into trouble it begins with cash flow. And when you are chronically running budget deficits, your cash is going to dry up.”

Fed OKs request for Japan stake in Morgan Stanley
WASHINGTON
The Federal Reserve has granted approval for Japan`s largest bank to purchase a stake in U.S. investment giant Morgan Stanley.
The Fed issued an order Monday saying that it had approved the request of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. to acquire up to 24.9 percent of the voting shares of Morgan Stanley.
Both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, the last two major independent investment banks in the United States, won approval last month from the Fed to convert to bank holding companies in an effort to withstand the severe financial storms raking Wall Street.

for Atheist,
If I remember well, you are from Bangalore. You did describe in narrative details, how it has deterioated. I am glad to know that my reply did help you. Get me a coffee when visit Banagalore.
Any business thrives on good product, good service, attention to the customer and above all solving the customer`s problems (called after sales service). A good appearance, friendly behaviour and smiling face (not laughing) welcomes the customer. Further, if you have a small business, the door has to be see through or open shop so that even working class people can walk through. If they find the shop behind the door, they feel the goods must be expensive. Neatness and basic cleanliness is the most important part of the retail business.
Never eat or allow employee to eat in the shop for taking lunch or dinner. Nor should one allow eating of tobacco or paan.
Biggies may not do well, because they tried to build the business just because they had the access to large amount of public funds. They do not train the staff as well as the Western corporations. There is no uniform, and if there is one, it is shabby, The employees are also having badly cut moustache or beards. The people should be clean shaven as far as possible. If there is female employee, often I find, they come in traditional style using liberal dose of coconut oil (which smells bad to many visitors). This is especially true in Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, the retail owners pay for hair styles, clothes, make up and also force their employees to wear identification tag all the time.
Of course, one has to modify the approach having regard to local culture, but basic things should not be compromised.
Some small expenses on such basics bring in more and wealthy customers.

Kalidas sir,
I am a part of the unorganized retail industry in India. I had asked you a question a few months earlier about the deteriorating life style of us middle class INDIANS caused by the global financial turmoil. I dont expect you to remember it. But your REPLY was of tremendous help.
Sir,In the last 3 months the sales have picked up in most of the small and medium retail stores(unorganized sector).
In fact the sales now are around 6 to 8 % MORE than the corresponding festival season last year.
At tha same time, the sales of BIGGIES like RELIANCE RETAIL and BIG BAZAAR(Kishore biyani) are lower compared to last year sales even though their Prices are very competitive.
Sir,Its very confusing.
What could be the reason? A response would be appreciated.
