U.S. President George W. Bush To Make Statement Later Today After Continued Market Volatility To Assure Americans That Every Action Is Being Taken To Stabilise The Financial System, A Day After The U.S. Stock Market Tumbled More Than 600 Points

...

10 Oct 2008 10:51

Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram made the following statement on behalf of the Union Cabinet on the financial situation-

The United States and many countries in Europe are passing through a severe financial crisis. The ripple effects of this crisis are being felt in other countries, including India. The authorities in the US and the Europe have taken a number of bold and unconventional steps in order to stabilise the financial situation. We hope that their efforts will succeed.

2. The main problem is liquidity. In the absence of adequate liquidity, many financial institutions in the US and Europe have suffered a meltdown and they have been bailed out by their respective Governments and Central Banks.

3. As far as India is concerned, the fundamentals of our economy are strong. In the first quarter of 2008-09, the growth of GDP was 7.9 per cent. On current trends, we expect that the growth rate for the whole year will be close to 8 per cent.

4. There are many indicators which underline the sound fundamentals of the Indian economy. For example, during April-August, 2008, exports have increased, in dollar terms, by 35.1 per cent and imports have increased, in dollar terms, by 37.7 per cent. Many sectors have shown impressive growth. There is ample evidence that cumulative investments in the pipeline continue to be high. Huge capacities are being added in a number of sectors including power, steel, oil and automobiles.

5. While there has been a negative trend in portfolio investments, foreign direct investment during the period April to August, 2008, has been robust. India attracted FDI of US$14.8 billion, amounting to 114 per cent of the FDI in the corresponding period of last year.

We made good progress in past few years. Now global melt down - for no fault of ours is overtaking us.We all have lost. There is not much to write about markets, stocks and positive things. Let all of us get into self destructive phase, fight with each other, there are many issues of religion, region, caste and historical grievances awaiting redressal and injustice heaped on us. Many great issues like whose God is better, which language etc remain unresolved. Fifty percent of our districts are as it is suffer from violence. WE ON THIS BOARD CAN NOT GET PHYSICAL, THEREFORE FIGHT WITH VENOMOUS WRITING - BURN OURSELVES - in new rebirth a rejuvenated nation will emerge from ashes like mythical African bird!!!...

Dude , U are really a rockstar. And I mean it.Rock on ......we need it.I need it.to c the next day , if not with exuberance but definately with calm strength , strength which i derive when i go through the lives of people like you.
And yes kiss your mom for me , from a ``stranger``.
Good luck for your cancer. That you will survive , but you have already survived the onslaught on the soul.which I believe is the god we are looking for.
u take care man......Cheers...

Dear Atheist,
At the outset........ I started to read your msg and havnt ! Its too depressing and purposeless, in my context, coz I am a believer..

And you ,my friend are very angry...living in a perpetual “Monday morning blues syndrome”.

This comes to you not for the sake of arguement, straight from my heart, verbattim,so I hope you will excuse the errors

My Mom who is the saintliest person I know is in the throes of Alzheimer’s .She doesn’t know me anymore..I should be very bitter ,but I thank God that he has taken away all her worldly worries away from her..

My brother was assassinated by Naga milltants in cold blood. It was painful. Extremely painful. I cant say how one lets go or heals one`s heart. But I had to forget about my pain and be there for his wife and two sons..so that I could be a constructive ,positive influence in their lives and not just rave and rant against God for doing this to us..

I am a Cancer survivor...well not completely ,but I think /I hope I am there. There are so many other unfair episodes I cannot share with you here . ....

But I still do believe there is someone up there..maybe i need to believe it. We suffer because of our beliefs, like the young don’t die, like there should be no suffering in the world etc. We believe in all this and end up hurting ourselves . I love my mom ,but don’t pity her. I believe she had to go through this. Yes I need to be with her, and give her my best. I tell her silly jokes ,and I think I am her favourite” stranger”. We listen to music, I take her to the Gurudwara. I could just as easily be angry, And make life miserable for her and myself , by saying why ? WHY?? WHY?? Would that help her? You go through what you have to, and for me HE knows best. And it works for me.

What or who is God? To me ,it is a kind of ‘code of conduct” ,and how we conduct ourselves ,making our lives and other`s lives as happy as possible. If there was no God, we /I would have invented one. Who needs him? The weak, the timid, the disturbed, the despairing, the lonely, the fearless, the seeker of truth, we all need him to remove the despair, to give us hope ....

I think its natural to go through the phase you are going through. It is good to explore your spirituality, provoke your conscience, and then recognise the obvious and relevant .I hope you have a homecoming of sorts, and your faith in Him ,is deeper and stronger than ever.I hope you too start to believe that God is” for me” and not “against” me.

God Bless my friend and take care.

Iceland: This volcanic island near the Arctic Circle is on the brink of becoming the first "national bankruptcy" of the global financial meltdown. The country`s top four banks now hold foreign liabilities in excess of $100bn, debts that dwarf Iceland`s gross domestic product of $14bn.

Home to just 320,000 people on a territory the size of Kentucky, Iceland has formidable international reach because of an outsized banking sector that set out with Viking confidence to conquer swaths of the British economy - from fashion retailers to top soccer teams.

The strategy gave Icelanders one of the world`s highest per capita incomes. But now they are watching helplessly as their economy implodes - their currency losing almost half its value, and their heavily exposed banks collapsing under the weight of debts incurred by lending in the boom times.

A full-blown collapse of Iceland`s financial system would send shock waves across Europe, given the heavy investment by Icelandic banks and companies across the continent.

One of Iceland`s biggest companies, retailing investment group Baugur, owns or has stakes in dozens of major European retailers - including enough to make it the largest private company in Britain, where it owns a handful of stores such as the famous toy store Hamley`s.

Kaupthing, Iceland`s largest bank and one of those whose share trading was suspended last week to stop a huge sell-off, has also invested in European retail groups.

Thousands of Britons have accounts with Icesave, the online arm of Landsbanki that regulators said was likely to file for bankruptcy after it stopped permitting customers to withdraw money from their accounts Tuesday. "Everything is closed. We couldn\`t sell our stock or take money from the bank,"

To try to wrest control of the spiraling situation, the government also loaned $680m to Kaupthing to tide it over and said it was negotiating a $5.4bn loan from Russia to shore up the nation`s finances.

Icelanders are also beginning to question how a relative few were able to generate the disproportionate wealth - and associated debt - that Haarde has warned puts the entire country at risk of bankruptcy.

Back home, the average family`s wealth soared 45 percent in half a decade and gross domestic product rose at around 5 percent a year. But the whole system was built on a shaky foundation of foreign debt.

Those external liabilities mean the private sector has had great difficulty financing its debts, such as the more than $5.25bn racked up by Kaupthing in five years to help fund British deals.

After watching the free-fall for several days, the Central Bank of Iceland stepped in Tuesday to fix the exchange rate of the currency at 175 - a level equal to 131 krona against the euro.

Haarde said he believed the measures had renewed confidence in the system. He also was critical of the lack of an Europe-wide response to the crisis, saying Iceland had been forced to adopt an "every-country-for-itself" mentality.

He acknowledged that Iceland`s financial reputation was likely to suffer from both the crisis and the response despite strong fundamentals such as the fishing industry and clean and renewable energy resources. As regular Icelanders begin to blame the government and market regulators, "victims of external circumstances.I believe it is absolutely wrong to say these banks were reckless. TOI--
